When it comes to intelligence, mules have got it where it counts. These hybrids - bred from male donkeys and female horses - have turned out to be smarter than either of their parent species.

Leanne Proops at the University of Sussex in Brighton, UK, tested the learning skills of horses, donkeys and mules in a bid to assess their cognitive abilities.

Six of each animal were shown sets of two food buckets, each marked with a different symbol. In order to gain access to the food, the animals had to pick the correct bucket. The mules learned to discriminate between more pairs of symbols than the horses or donkeys, and did so more consistently.

Mule is smarter than Horse

Proops reckons that increased intelligence in the mule is a result of hybrid vigour, where the best genes of the parent species "mix and match" to produce hybrids with superior traits. While this mechanism gives mules greater height and endurance than either parent, this is the first study to show that hybrid vigour is able to improve cognitive function, too.

Although mules are physically robust and smart, they are also sterile, notes Ben Fitzpatrick of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. So unfortunately, in evolutionary terms, this increased intelligence is a gift that cannot be passed on.

A minimally invasive procedure called retrograde venous embolisation has been found to be effective in treating men with infertility problems due to swollen veins.

Male infertility could be due to problems with the sperm and seminal fluid, or with the reproductive organs. Varicocoele is a common cause of male infertility, and may present as large dilated veins on the scrotum or a large painless bulge or swollen area on the scrotum.

Retrograde venous embolisation for varicocoele is done via a tiny catheter. It blocks excessive blood flow into the veins, allowing them to shrink back to normal size. To identify predictors of future pregnancy in partners of infertile men undergoing embolisation of varicocoeles, researchers from Britain studied 223 infertile men (aged between 18 and 50 years) with 228 varicocoeles who underwent retrograde venous embolisation.

Are you impotent? KNow this

They found that 226 varicocoeles (out of 228) in 223 patients were treated successfully. Subsequent investigations revealed that the varicocoele had fully resolved in 206 patients (92 percent). A three-months follow up semen analysis showed significant improvements in sperm motility and sperm count.

The researchers noted that sperm movement was the only significant pre-treatment predictor of pregnancy amongst other potential predictors, such as varicocoele severity, hormone levels, ultrasound findings, and other semen parameters.

The above findings suggest that retrograde venous embolisation does offer fertility benefits, however, further research in this field is needed.

China to open the world’s fastest intercity rail line linking Beijing with Olympic co-host Tianjin from August 1, one week before the Olympics, the ministry of railways announced Wednesday.

"The Beijing-Tianjin Intercity Railway will be the world’s only rail line on which passenger trains could run at 350 km per hour," Deputy Railway Minister Wang Zhiguo told a press conference.

The new service would cut the 120-km journey from the 70 minutes now to about 30 minutes, Wang said, adding that there were five stations along the line: the cavernous new Beijing South Railway Station, Yizhuang, Yongle, Wuqing and Tianjin..

Chinarail-the world fastest

The intercity rail line will shuttle spectators, athletes, media people and other passengers between Beijing and Tianjin, which is to host 12 football matches from August 6-15.

"The opening of the Beijing-Tianjin railway ahead of the Beijing Games is undoubtedly good news for athletes and other passengers," Wang said.

The railway, on which construction started in July 2005, was built at a total cost of 21.5 billion yuan ($3.1 billion), said Wang.

Initially, six trains will be operated on the line.

These sleek trains with aircraft-like cabins, swivel seats, spacious interiors and rooftop solar panels were built by the Sifang Locomotive and Rolling Stock Company.

Called the CRH-3 (China Railway High-speed), these trains are China’s first self-designed and self-manufactured passengers trains.

The secret’s out about next week’s Beijing Olympics opening ceremony. Be ready for a dramatic countdown, giant whales, an illuminated globe and performers flying through the air like Peter Pan.

A South Korean television crew filmed a rehearsal of the show earlier this week at the massive Bird’s Nest national stadium, leaking the first video from a show so closely guarded that practice sessions have been protected by three rings of checkpoints. Cast and crew were required to sign confidentiality agreements.

Click here to watch the leaked opening ceremony video

A Beijing Olympics official said Thursday the report by South Korean broadcaster SBS, which was then circulated online, was "disappointing." Sun Weide, spokesman for Beijing’s Olympic organizing committee, would not say whether SBS would be punished, only that officials were "checking into the situation."

china-flag

"But the fragments cannot demonstrate the full picture of the spectacular opening ceremony," Sun said in a statement.

There were no huge surprises from the footage shot in the darkened stadium, though it gave a glimpse of the lavishness of the 3 1/2-hour opening ceremony next Friday with an expected cast of 10,000.

China’s most famous film director, Zhang Yimou ("Raise the Red Lantern," "House of Flying Daggers"), spent the last three years designing the spectacle, trying to boil 5,000 years of Chinese history into a 50-minute show.

Undulating white columns apparently simulated a waterfall, and giant blue whales were projected onto the strips of roof bordering the opening of the top of the stadium. The video showed a giant blue-and-green illuminated globe on the floor of the stadium at one point.

The rehearsal included contemporary dancers dressed in black and others twirling ribbons, dozens of drummers, martial arts experts, and several colorfully dressed performers suspended by wires and floating above the audience.

One segment featured a half-dozen actors on a raised platform surrounded by hundreds of other performers, while cymbals clanged noisily in the tradition of Beijing opera.

The most impressive part of the show was a countdown accompanied by drums, the SBS report said. Footage showed rows of hundreds of people, flashing cards to form the number two, then one, while chanting lustily in Chinese. Strobe lights flashed.

An SBS crew filmed the rehearsal without having to sneak in, a network official said. SBS, one of South Korea’s major TV networks, shares Olympic broadcasting rights in Korea with two other networks.

"Nobody stopped us when we entered the main stadium on Monday. Chinese officials let us in after we showed our ID cards and we shot the rehearsal," the official from SBS told The Associated Press from Beijing by telephone. He asked not to be identified as he was not authorized to speak to media.

SBS spokesman Park Jae-man said it was regrettable if Beijing Olympics organizers felt offended by the broadcast.

"The purpose of the broadcast was aimed at heightening enthusiasm toward the Beijing Olympics by showing South Korean viewers the magnificence of the opening ceremony, there was no other intention," Park said, adding that his company didn’t secretly tape it.

Unconfirmed media reports have said that anyone who violates the opening ceremony confidentiality agreement was subject to jail time. However, Zhang laughed off questions about such a punishment during a news conference earlier this year, saying "Who is going to deliver such a judgment?"

The video of the rehearsal was circulating on Chinese message boards up until Thursday morning, but no working versions could easily be found in China by early afternoon.

A few details about the ceremony had been trickling out since rehearsals began at the Bird’s Nest earlier this month.

Organizers have not been able to hide the enormous bursts of fireworks exploding around the stadium at night. The show will include dozens of smiley face bursts and is expected to feature fireworks in the shape of a yellow dragon with red peony flowers in the background.

The main artistic director of the fireworks show has said fireworks will be launched from more than 1,800 sites around the city, including major urban areas from Tiananmen Square to the Bird’s Nest stadium.

Like many aspects of the Beijing Games, the opening ceremony has become a political issue. Steven Spielberg sparked controversy in February when he withdrew as an artistic adviser to protest what he saw as China’s refusal to do more to help end the humanitarian crisis in Sudan’s Darfur region.

While President Bush has said he would attend the opening ceremony, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper have said they plan to stay away. French President Nicolas Sarkozy is scheduled to attend, after first threatening to skip it.

One part of the opening ceremony still remains top secret. It is not known how the Olympic cauldron will be lit, and who will be the final torchbearer.

Chinese media reports have speculated that the cauldron will be lit by a fire-breathing dragon or phoenix.

The Indian economy is the 12th largest in the world. That is, India’s gross domestic product stands at $1.171 trillion. However, in terms of purchasing power parity, India is the world’s fourth largest economy. Its GDP in purchasing power parity terms is at $3.092 trillion.

These are the year 2007 figures, recently released by the World Bank. By definition, purchasing power parity (PPP) is an economic theory that estimates the amount of adjustment needed on the exchange rate between countries in order for the exchange to be equivalent to each currency’s purchasing power.

India is the one of the world’s fastest growing economies, yet its annual per capita income remains quite low at $950, or about Rs 40,000. That puts India in the 160th spot. Incidentally, World Bank figures show that the world’s GDP is at $54.347 trillion. India accounts for just over 2 per cent of global GDP.

So which are the world’s largest economies?

1. United States
The American GDP is at $13.812 trillion, making it the world’s largest economy. It accounts for more than 25 per cent of the entire world’s GDP!
In terms of purchasing power parity too, the United States is the world’s leading economy. However, its per capita income at $46,040, per year, pegs it at the 15th spot in the world.

2. Japan
Japan, with a GDP of $4.377 trillion, is the world’s second largest economy. However, in terms of purchasing power parity, Japan is ranked third by the World Bank. It’s GDP in PPP terms is $4.283 trillion. Japan’s per capita income (annual) is $37,670, making it the 25th highest in the world.

3. Germany
Germany is the world’s third largest, with its GDP at $3.297 trillion. But in PPP terms, Germany is the world’s fifth largest economy. It’s GDP in PPP terms is at $2.752 trillion. Its per capita income is the 23rd highest in the world, at $38,860.

4. China
China, the Asian giant, is the world’s fourth largest economy with a GDP of $3.281 trillion; but in purchasing power parity terms it ranks second at $7.055 trillion. It is the world’s fastest growing major economy and its giant strides have taken the world by a storm. Economists predict that over the next few decades, it could topple the US as the world’s largest economy. China’s per capita income, however, is still low at $2,630 per year.

5. United Kingdom
Britain is the world’s fifth largest economy. Its GDP is at $2.728 trillion. In purchasing power parity terms, the United Kingdom’s GDP stands at $2.082 trillion making it the seventh largest in the world. Britain is a rich nation. Its per capita income is at an impressive $42,740. That would rank it in the 19th spot.

6. France
The French GDP is at $2.563 trillion, making it the world’s sixth largest economy; but in terms of PPP, it is the world’s 8th largest (GDP in PPP terms, $2.054 trillion). The per capita income of the French at $38,500 makes them the 24th richest people in the world.

7. Italy
Italy’s GDP in absolute terms is at $2.107 trillion. That makes it the planet’s seventh largets economy. However, in purchasing power parity terms its GDP is at $1.780 trillion and its rank is 10th. Italians’ per capita income is the 30th highest in the world. It is $33,540.

8. Spain
Spain is the eighth largest economy with its GDP at $1.429 trillion. In purchasing power parity, however, it slips to the 11th spot ($1.373 trillion). With a per capita income of $29,450 per year, its people are the 36th richest in the world.

9. Canada
The Canadian GDP stands at $1.326 trillion, making it the world’s ninth largest economy. In PPP terms, however, it stands 14th in the world. Its GDP in PPP terms is at $1.178 trillion. Its people enjoy a comfortable life with a per capita income of $39,420, which is 22nd highest in the world.

10. Brazil
The Brazilian economy too has been growing at a scorching pace. It is the world’s 10th largest economy with a GDP of $1.314 trillion. But in terms of purchasing power (GDP - $1.834 trillion), it is better placed at number 9. Amongst the emerging economies, it has one of the best per capita income figures -- $5,910. This places it in the 85th spot in the world.

Worldwide consumer broadband connections will grow from 323 million connections in 2007 to 499 million in 2012, according to Gartner, Inc. Worldwide consumer broadband connections penetrated 18 per cent of households in 2007, and by 2012, households with a broadband connection will reach 25 per cent.

According to Gartner, five countries including Canada, Netherlands, Switzerland, South Korea and Hong Kong exceeded 60 per cent broadband penetration into the home in 2007; and, this is expected to grow to 17 countries by 2012.

“Depending on the specific market conditions, availability of Internet-enabled devices and the continued impact of broadband on consumer lifestyles, we expect some markets will have a broadband ceiling at 80 per cent penetration or greater,” said Amanda Sabia, principal research analyst, Gartner.

Broadband penetration to peak soon

“Broadband penetration will increase, especially in the geographically larger markets, as current broadband providers continue to deploy their services, as newer technologies (wireless broadband, such as WiMAX) attract subscribers, and as users experience firsthand how speed enhances their Internet sessions,” Sabia said.

When looking at household penetration for emerging versus mature markets, the overall growth is skewed. Not only will the digital divide continue between the emerging and mature markets, it will widen by 13 percentage points.

China’s efforts to clear the skies over its polluted capital are having an effect, officials said on Friday, insisting that Beijing’s air would be safe for Olympic athletes despite persistent smog over the city.

Beijing authorities have taken cars off the road and opened new subway lines in the past week, in addition to halting some construction and suspending factory production, in a last-ditch effort to ensure clear skies when the Games open on August 8.

"For the effects of the measures we have taken to be increasingly felt, we will have to make continued efforts," Du Shaozhong, of the Beijing Environmental Protection Bureau, told a news conference.

"Given the geographical location of Beijing, it is rather difficult to improve air quality and cut emissions," he said.

The city’s chronic pollution, a source of respiratory illness, has been one of the biggest worries for Games organizers, who have had to deflect international criticism over air quality and who have struggled to contain the environmental effects of China’s breakneck economic growth.

ONE of the biggest mysteries of HIV is why the virus spreads so readily via heterosexual sex in Africa, but not elsewhere. A study in monkeys suggests parasitic worms may be to blame.

Evan Secor of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and his colleagues infected macaques with schistosomes, parasitic worms that infect millions of people in Africa each year. Infected and uninfected macaques were injected with simian-human immunodeficiency virus (SHIV) via the rectum. Only about 1/20th the amount of virus was needed to cause SHIV infection in monkeys with worms compared with those without the parasite.

Why HIV infection is high in AFrica?

If infection with worms also increases a person’s risk of acquiring HIV, and if this is true of infection via the vagina as well as the rectum, Secor says it could explain why vaginal sex is riskier in Africa than elsewhere. This could be because the urinary form of schistosomiasis, which affects up to 50 per cent of women in parts of Africa, damages the lining of the vagina, the first defence against HIV.

Studies suggested that what a mother eats can affect the taste preferences of her child. For example, the infants of mothers who drank carrot juice during pregnancy or breastfeeding seemed to prefer carrot-flavoured cereal.

To get a handle on how flavours from a mother’s diet get transferred into her milk, Helene Hausner and her colleagues at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark asked 18 lactating mothers to provide a sample of breast milk before they ate capsules containing the same compounds that give caraway seed, menthol, banana and liquorice their flavour, and then at regular intervals afterwards.

They found that different flavours take varying amounts of time to appear in breast milk. While concentrations of the caraway and liquorice compounds peaked 2 hours after the mother ate them, the banana compound could only be detected in the milk during the first hour after consumption. Menthol was present at relatively stable levels for between 2 and 8 hours after consumption.

All four flavours had disappeared from the women’s breast milk eight hours after they ate the capsules. However, there was considerable variation between the women in how the flavours were transferred to milk.

Breast feeding taste of breast milk

"Human milk is clearly a substance which varies considerably in flavour over time and between different people," says Gary Beauchamp of the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who has also studied how flavours pass into breast milk.

The findings could have practical implications for mothers worried about why their infant is refusing to feed, says Gill Rapley, a UK nurse with more than 20 years’ experience specialising in postnatal care. "Mothers often talk about whether something in their milk may have upset their baby, but within 8 hours most flavours will be gone."

Preliminary results from Hausner also suggest that breastfed infants might be more receptive to new flavours than bottle-fed ones. "It’s not like if the mother eats apple pie the baby thinks ’mmmm, apple pie’, but it may make them more accepting of the flavour of other foods," she says. "Breastfeeding may prepare the infant for flavour changes and new experiences when they start to eat solid foods."

Mothers of bottle-fed infants should not despair, however. "If you don’t breastfeed you should change the brand of formula milk you use from time to time," says Hausner, who has also found that different brands of formula milk vary in taste.

Controlling your calorie intake is the bedrock of all weight loss plans. But how can you stay the course when food is abundant and the temptation to over indulge is strong? Start by making a few small adjustments to your dining and snacking habits. For instance:

Keep food off the table. If you portion out servings on plates at the stove or kitchen counter and don’t set food out on serving platters, you’ll be less tempted to take more once your plate is empty.

Don’t eat from packages. It’s all too easy to lose track of how much food you’ve gobbled if you’re nibbling straight from the box. Instead, portion out crackers, pretzels, and other snacks on a plate to give yourself a visible sense of what you’re consuming.

Downsize your dishes. Smaller plates and bowls make portions appear larger.

Take it slow. It takes about 20 minutes for the brain’s appetite-control center to register that there’s food in the stomach. To wait it out, put down your fork between each bite and take small sips from your drink.

Work for your food. Eating foods that require some effort -- peeling an orange, cracking open crabs, or cutting open a baked potato, for example -- slows you down even more, giving food a chance to make you feel full.

Socialize outside the kitchen. People seem to congregate in the kitchen, but you’ll be less tempted to nosh if you move the action to the living room.

If you’re using encryption software to keep part of your computer’s hard drive private, you may have a problem, according to researchers at the University of Washington and British Telecommunications.

They’ve discovered that popular programs like Word and Google Desktop store data on unencrypted sections of a computer’s hard drive -- even when the programs are working with encrypted files.

"Information is spilling out from the encrypted region into the unencrypted region" said Tadayoshi Kohno, an assistant professor at the University of Washington in Seattle who co-authored the study.

He believes that there are probably many other applications and operating system components that leak out information in a similar way. "I suspect that this is a potentially huge issue. We’ve basically cracked the surface," he said.

The researchers say that people who are using full-disk encryption, where every piece of data on their hard drive is encrypted, do not have to worry. However the issue pops up when users create an encrypted partition or virtual disk on their hard drives, leaving part of the drives unencrypted, or even when they store data on encrypted USB (Universal Serial Bus) devices, Kohno said.

Much faster than expected, the number of malware detections on the web has reached the unfortunate 1 million benchmark. According to F-Secure, these malwares are growing at a rate of 2,300 new detections per day; the number of Trojans, backdoors, exploits and other threats has doubled since the end of 2007.

This recent explosion of malware is said to be a result of the industrialisation of virus production, that is the packing, encryption, and obfuscation of existing families of malware.

F-Secure explains criminals are adapting and utilising enterprise level systems and code within their operations. The complexity and quality of their IT infrastructure and systems continues to increase, providing them with the power to silently flood the Internet with their menace.

Malware-Growth-by-Year

Malware as a service is another factor contributing to this benchmark, according to the company. Hackers sell their services to common criminals, who in turn launch DoD attacks, issue millions of phishing emails or engage in industrial espionage.

"Furthermore we have also seen the rise of polymorph viruses leading to the explosion of malware. Malware 2.0 changes its code every time the file is executed and launches DoD attacks on virus researchers. Storm, coined by F-Secure after subject lines playing on storms across Europe, is the prime example and is still active worldwide," the company said.

Male infertility is still a problem among men. Now, a simple, minimally invasive procedure can treat a common cause of male infertility and improve a couple’s chances of having a baby, a new study finds.

The condition, called varicocele, is a network of tangled blood vessels in the scrotum which prevents the normal circulation of blood through the veins in the testicles. A minimally invasive radiological procedure called embolization can, in most cases, correct the problem.

"Using the embolization of varicoceles, we were able to improve factors related to infertility, especially sperm count and sperm motility," said lead researcher Dr. Sebastian Flacke, an associate professor of radiology at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston.

In embolization, a small catheter is inserted into the groin and, using X-ray guidance, is placed in the varicocele. Once the catheter is placed, a tiny platinum coil and a few milliliters of an agent to ensure the closure of the gonadic vein are also inserted.

The minimally invasive procedure has a short recovery time; most patients go home the next day.

Varicoceles are very common, Flacke noted. In fact, about 20 percent of all men have them. Not all of these cause infertility or need to be treated, he said. The problem is usually treated if it causes pain, shrinkage or fertility problems.

"If you’re dealing with infertility and have varicoceles - this should be treated," Flacke said. By improving sperm count, the treatment could also be valuable in situations where the woman is having problems conceiving, he added.

"Most of the time, infertility is on both the male and female side," Flacke said. "Most of the time females get treated first if there is an issue, and men are neglected. I think you could boost the performance of the sperm if a varicocele is present and treated."

Flacke noted that the success rate of the treatment is very high. More than 95 percent of the time the procedure corrects the problem.

For the study, Flacke’s team collected data on 223 infertile men with at least one varicose vein. All the men had healthy partners with whom they wanted to have a baby.

Flacke’s group used embolization to successfully relieve 226 of the 228 varicose veins among the men. Three months after the procedure, the researchers analyzed the sperm of 173 patients. The analysis showed, on average, that sperm motility and sperm count had significantly improved.

After six months, 45 couples (26 percent) reported a pregnancy. "That’s a very large number for a simple procedure," Flacke said.

Infertility expert Dr. Hossein Sadeghi-Nejad, an associate professor of urology at UMDNJ New Jersey Medical School and Hackensack University Medical Center, thinks this procedure can be useful even if it is not the preferred one.

Sadeghi-Nejad noted that, as a rule, infertility treatment begins with a woman. "The fact is that a male factor is responsible for infertility in about half of the cases," he said. "Varicoceles are one example of the male factor that can affect fertility."

If you do treat varicoceles properly, you do get improvement in sperm counts and pregnancy rates, Sadeghi-Nejad said.

However, there are drawbacks to embolization, Sadeghi-Nejad added. These include a steep learning curve to get used to doing the procedure and the danger of prolonged or misdirected radiation, especially if there are varicoceles on both sides of the scrotum.

"I recommend, in experienced hands, a microsurgical varicocelectomy, which is a very quick operation with minimal time off work," Sadeghi-Nejad said. "The patient is back to work in two or three days."

"Don’t ever do anything as though you were an amateur.
"Anything you do, do it as a Professional to Professional standards."
"If you have the idea about anything you do that you just dabble in it, you will wind up with a dabble life. There’ll be no satisfaction in it because there will be no real production you can be proud of.

"Develop the frame of mind that whatever you do, you are doing it as a professional and move up to professional standards in it.

"Never let it be said of you that you lived an amateur life.

"Professionals see situations and they handle what they see. They are not amateur dabblers.

"So learn this as a first lesson about life. The only successful beings in any field, including living itself, are those who have a professional viewpoint and make themselves and ARE professionals" - L. Ron Hubbard

Google isn’t satisfied with dominating just one part of the Web, even if it is a fantastically lucrative one. The past few years have seen the search giant getting into all sorts of new areas, whether through development or purchase. Sometimes these forays are big news-think YouTube-and other times they’re flops. Remember the Jaiku microblogging service? The company’s latest online venture, Google Lively, enters the world of virtual online worlds dominated by Second Life and, to some extent, World of Warcraft. I tried out this new app (which is, of course, in beta) to see if it’s a serious challenge to the big players.

Google Lively launched in Beta version

To use Lively, you’ll need a Windows PC with a graphics card that has at least 32MB of memory and supports DirectX 9 or later. Second Life, by contrast, uses up more system resources, but its minimum hardware requirements aren’t much more demanding. For both, you have to download and install the application, then create your avatar. The setup software, a mere half-megabyte, performs another brief download, installs a browser add-on for Internet Explorer or Firefox, and puts a green chat-bubble icon on your desktop. You double-click on the icon to start, but otherwise all Lively activities take place within your browser. When you start Lively, you’ll need a Google account to sign in.

While Yahoo!, somehow, seems to have bought more time to keep itself safe from the Carl touch, Microsoft has been bitten by the bug. Steve Ballmer and Carl Icahn had been working hard on brining Yahoo! to its knees. But with Carl getting on Yahoo! board, the proxy war has come to an end. What future holds for Yahoo! may appear to be a bit foggy at this moment, things are a bit clearer at Microsoft end. And its gray and stormy.

After the long and exhausting failed effort to take over Yahoo!, Microsoft has decided to split its Platforms and Services Division (PSD) into two groups: Windows/Windows Live and Online Services. Both groups will report directly to strongman Steve Ballmer. But another pain point is, PSD president Kevin Johnson, who was after the Yahoo! deal is standing at the exit doors of the company.

“Kevin has built a supremely talented organisation and laid the foundation for the future success of Windows and our Online Services Business. This new structure will give us more agility and focus in two very competitive arenas,” Ballmer said. “It has been a pleasure to work with Kevin, and we wish him well in the future.”

In the Online Services Business, Microsoft will create a new senior lead position and will conduct a search that will span internal and external candidates. In the meantime, senior vice president Satya Nadella will continue to lead Microsoft’s search, MSN and ad platform engineering efforts.

Now we have two new so-called healthy products in the market. Vegetable Atta Noodles and Dal Atta Noodles. Mostly targeted at children. Now, are they really healthy like the advertisements proclaim?

vegdaln01

I thought I would check out how many vegetables the vegetable noodles contained. So I boiled some water and added the masala, and I found the following.

vegnood02

I wasn’t surprised and not at all impressed. I would have preferred to add the veggies myself. Then I checked the ingredients list:

vegnood03

This told me something. The first ingredient in the noodles was whole wheat or atta (the manufacturers are supposed to list the ingredients according to the quantity present. The ingredient which is maximum in quantity is listed first) and though this gives the impression that the noodles are mostly made of atta I knew they weren’t, from the taste and texture. The ingredient next in line is wheat flour, which means maida or refined white flour which as everyone knows is devoid of nutrition and fibre. The company has admitted that whole wheat flour and refined flour has been mixed. So even if we assume that they have used wholesome whole wheat flour, they have still mixed it with maida. Now, how much more of whole wheat flour have they used as compared to maida? We don’t know, because there is no legal requirement for the manufacturers to say so. The atta is probably marginally more than the maida. The other ingredients are vegetable oil, sal and guar gum.

Now lets see what the tastemaker/garnishing or masala contains. Dehydrated vegetables (carrot, toasted onion, peas, coriander leaves). Dehydrated veggies are not as nutritious as fresh vegetables ofcourse. Scientific Evidence says that drying can cause some loss of some nutrients. While the calorie content of the vegetables does not change, and nor does the fibre content, Vitamin C is destroyed during the blanching and drying processes. B Vitamins like Thiamin, Riboflavin and Niacin also reduce during the blanching. However Vitamin A is retained if the processing is carried out under “controlled heat methods.” I am not sure what that means but I presume that the company manufacturing this product in India, being a multi-national, is using the technically superior method.
Minerals are usually not lost as long the vegetables get rehydrated in the same water and this does happen while cooking the noodles. In any case, even if the vegetables contain a few nutrients, they are negligible as the quantity of the veggies is abysmal. One expects more, specially because the noodles are being loudly advertised as vegetable noodles! The other ingredients listed are sugar, noodle powder, mixed spices, hydrolysed groundnut protein, salt, edible vegetable oil, garlic powder and onion powder.

But wait, this isn’t all. I haven’t yet mentioned that this masala also contains colour!! Colour, acidifying agent, a flavour enhancer and MORE colour! A natural colour this time.

Now tell tell me how true their slogan is and how true the picture. The actual amount of vegetables you have seen for yourself.

Maggino01

The picture below shows the ingredients of the Dal Noodles:

dalnood01

Now why make a big song and dance about these noodles being HEALTHY? It is a false statement. It also misleads people. What bugs me is that this product is targeted at children and we know that kids today tend to demand the products they see on television. And in this case mothers might find it difficult to tell their children that this product is not good for health because the advertiser is saying it is.

All of us at one time or the other have have fallen victim to tantalizing offers by traders or have got taken in by misleading advertising. Here’s a reminder of the traps we could fall into, many of which we are familiar with but still get caught in!

Be alert for the following trading practices:
1. Enticing customers by talking about ‘sales’ and ‘discounts’ but actually keeping limited items on sale. The customer is then lured to the other, higher priced goods.
2. Prices being hiked up and then slashed to “show” reductions.
3. When you see signs like up to 50 percent discount, it does not mean that all items are on such a heavy discount. Often very few are.
4. Shops with continuous ‘offers’ and ‘sales.’ Signs outside the shop give the impression that the sale is temporary and that you better come and get it before the stock is over…but there are retailers who have these sales on all the time.
5. At times discounts can be minuscule and unless the original selling price (OSP) is clearly mentioned, customers can get fooled. This is assuming that the OSP is genuine!
6. There have been cases where discounts are not taken into account in the final bill. So check that out, particularly if the discount is substantial.
7. Free gifts are usually not provided unless asked for.
8. When you come across a buy one get one free offer on a food product, check expiry dates. And if it is not a perishable product, check for defects. Ask if the products are ‘Seconds’.
9. Buy 1 get 1 free offers are tempting and tempt one to buy products which may land up lying around the house unused.
10. With regard to clothes, not all have washing instructions issued on them. If not, ensure that you find out. Thin silk easily tears when you hand-wash it and cotton bleeds.

Shopping Tips to avoid Cheating Advertisers

Be alert when you come across the following type of advertising:
1. When you are told that everyone else is doing it and so must you. Or that buyers of the product are just like you.
2. Advertisements which give incomplete information or there is something in the fine print that you don’t notice until you buy. The phrase ‘Conditions Apply’ is a red flag! Often so-called “lifetime guarantees” are not lifetime at all.
3. Advertisements in newspapers which appear like articles or inside of articles, but are actually product placements and paid for.
4. Product placements in movies can be misleading…be aware that they are being paid for.
5. Ads which try to sell a dubious medical product or treatment not backed by scientific evidence. This can range from ads which promise to get rid your glasses to those which guarantee to make you thin.
6. Even authentic testimonials by real people can be edited, and not quoted in toto, and if this happens, they can be misleading. The words of these people could also be taken out of context and presented to you in a misleading way.
7. Never ever forget that celebrities rarely use the product they advertise. I once read of a famous model for a fancy skin cream who actually used Vaseline on her skin! If anyone is being paid to say they use such and such cream, why should anyone give it any credence? In any case remember that you are not going to be able to contact anyone for verification.
8. There is research which says that people unconsciously trust the printed ad more than a tv commercial. But print ads can be equally deceptive.

Some months ago we mentioned World of Warcraft, a MMORPG being used to study how diseases can spread in the real world. Turns out that there are more lessons to be learnt from studying the role playing game universe that are applicable in real life. One of them is how terror works, especially terror cells and the dynamics of crimes. If you have ever played WoW or heard about it you would know that it has a mind bogglingly diverse set of characters with varied powers and capabilities. The players mimic real life behaviour, both good and bad. The bad side includes crime and terrorism, including bio-terrorism.

Now, researchers have zeroed in on this specific trait and have found that studying the in-game behavior can tell them a lot about how bad guys can operate in real life. In fact, the insights gleaned are much more significant then those from AI simulations or mathematical modeling, the traditional tools of choice for analysts when studying phenomena like the possible spread of diseases like anthrax, or the probability of suicide bombers attacking a particular place. The crowd behavior, approximating real life after an act of terrorism can also be predicted by observing, for example, what surviving characters do after an explosion in a crowded area.

Some researchers however believe that WoW needn’t be taken too seriously by spooks. This is because dying in the game is no big deal and you can easily take another new avatar or simply return after a specific period of time. Obviously that’s not going to happen in real life and so players tend to take more unrealistic risks. However for all its flaws WoW is the closest researchers have got to real life conditions that can be controlled and they are not letting it go unstudied any time soon. Oh, and they also get the chance to mix business with pleasure, which is another added bonus.

According to the latest analysis of the Indian labour market by Pierre Audoin Consultants (PAC), out of the 21 centres opened since January 2007 by the 20 largest UK companies, only two were in India, while four were in China, three in Eastern Europe and Morocco, respectively. Nick Mayes, senior consultant at PAC said that in the short term, there was no “serious threat” to India’s outsourcing dominance. However, he added that companies are on the verge of reducing their dependence on “India’s heated labour market”. China’s emergence as a global sourcing hub has traditionally been slow but the report found that BT Global Services, EDS, IBM and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) have all started sourcing facilities in the country over the past 18 months.

resources

The two facilities launched in India were both outside the traditional hotspots of Bangalore and Mumbai-IBM’s new centre is in Noida and TCS’ expansion site in Hyderabad. Among the companies that were analysed were Accenture, BT Global Services, Capgemini, Capita, CSC, EDS, Fujitsu, HP, IBM and Logica. As salaries of the Indian workforce increase, it seems obvious for the western companies to look for options that provide reduced costs. With an efficient English speaking workforce, Europe seems to be a hot destination. Similarly, close proximity also enhances their say in the outsourcing industry. In fact, the emergence of increased outsourcing to China will be closely watched by the Indian industry for sure.

Microsoft extended support for its Windows XP Home and Windows XP Media Center operating systems through 2014 to match policies already in place for the business-oriented Windows XP Professional.

The addition of a five-year "extended support" phase to Windows XP will take effect in May 2009. In Microsoft parlance, extended support is the period when all support is fee-based and non-security hotfixes are produced only for corporate customers. Until April of 2009, Windows XP Home and Media Center will remain in what is called "mainstream support," which offers some no-charge support and free updates that don’t deal with security issues.

windows_xp_logo_thumb

Previously, all support for Windows XP Home was slated to end two years after the release of Vista, in other words, at the end of January 2009.

Windows XP debuted in October 2001. By the time it exits extended support, it will have been viable for more than 12 years, a record for Microsoft. In comparison, Windows Vista, which will ship to retail next week, is slated to enjoy support for just 10 years, until April 2017. Microsoft gave no reason for the support changes to Windows XP.

According to latest news reports, China now not only boasts of the largest population, but also the highest number of Internet users. The China Network Information Centre has revealed that the number of Internet users in China is around 221 million. However, although this figure is now greater than the number of Internet users in US, the ratio of Internet users to the total population is still lower than the global average. While the global average was 19.1 per cent, the Chinese stood at 16 percent.

CHINA_INTERNET_population_highest in the world

In the wake of online censorship and several other restrictions, these figures are more of an indication of the magnamous Chinese population, rather than the IT development. Although, this might be a moment of pride, especially from an Asian point of view, India definitely is in a much better state, considering the online freedom and liberty that we enjoy as surfers, despite the lower Internet penetration in rural areas.

Child porn is one of the toughest evils our society faces today. Paedophilia and other sickening crimes against sweet and joy-filled kids only depict the levels to which mankind can stoop. However strongly we may try to deny it, reality bites! Even though it’s been around for long, it was the Internet which unfortunately led to it becoming a mass phenomenon. The Internet simplified distribution of media of all kinds, which was traditionally the most difficult to do.

As Web sites proliferated, money flowed in and the exploitation and child abuse increased. Taking advantage of poor economic conditions, criminals have managed to lure children, many of them less than ten years of age, with some as young as two. The results are a schocking tale-disturbing pictures of them being sexually abused to a worldwide audience. Fortunately, many organisations have now started dedicated efforts to curb the spread of child porn.

fight_child_porn_225

A few years ago, Microsoft donated $1 million for fighting under age porn. Google, on its part has vowed to block child porn related advertisements. Recently, cell phone operators across Europe and Africa got together to found the Mobile Alliance Against Child Sexual Abuse to ban these images from cellular networks. With all the efforts commonly targetting this social evil, governments and law enforcement agencies have started a worldwide crack down. However, as a result of the online patronage, one Website would replace another that was blocked. After sustained efforts, there is finally some good news for organisations and activists working for the welfare of children-the number of Web sites peddling child porn has actually decreased. From a peak of 3,052 such sites in 2006, the number has fallen to 2,752 last year.

All these Web sites are in English, and most of them are based in Russia and the US. According to the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), an NGO that monitors these efforts, it is possible to put an end to this crime with more manageable number of sites and an agreement in place with hosting companies that stipulate the taking down of child porn Web sites. If everything goes according to plan, the Net will be a lot safer for the next generation.

Coiled up in a tornado is as much energy as an entire power plant. So a Canadian engineer has a plan to spin up his own twister and extract energy from its tethered tail. It all depends on heating the air near the surface so that it is much warmer than the air above. "You can generate energy whenever you have a temperature gradient," said Louis Michaud. "The source of the energy here is the natural movement of warm and cold air currents." These so-called convective air currents are only useful if they can be channeled in some way.

tornado-the dangerous power

That is why Michaud proposes using a tornado as a kind of drinking straw between the warm ground below and the cold sky above. Wind turbines placed at the bottom could generate electricity from the sucked-up air. Whirlwind tour: Tornadoes and hurricanes form when sun-heated air near the surface rises and displaces cooler air above. As outside air rushes in to replace the rising air, the whole mass begins to rotate. Michaud got the notion of a man-made tornado - what he calls the Atmospheric Vortex Engine (AVE) - while working as an engineer on gas turbines.

"When I looked further into it, I didn’t run into anything that was impossible," Michaud told LiveScience. The AVE structure is a 200-meter-wide arena with 100-meter-high walls. Warm humid air enters at the sides, directed to flow in a circular fashion. As the air whirls around at speeds up to 200 mph, a vacuum forms in the center, which holds the vortex together as it extends several miles into the sky. The concept is similar to a solar chimney with the swirling walls of the vortex replacing the brick walls of the tower.

But the AVE can reach much higher into the sky where the air is colder. With wind turbines at the inlets to the arena, Michaud calculates that as much as 200 megawatts of electricity (enough for a small city) could be extracted without draining the vortex of its power. "Look at natural tornadoes that destroy a house or carry off a car and still have plenty of energy left over," he said.

As common as lightning is, it still sparks considerable confusion among scientists. Many of the basics are understood, but researchers admit they don’t really understand how lightning gets from there to here. And they’re totally baffled by lightning’s link to X-rays, a discovery made back in 2001. "Nobody understands how lightning makes X-rays," says Martin Uman, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Florida.

lightning-gallery-18

"Despite reaching temperatures five times hotter than the surface of the sun, the temperature of lightning is still thousands of times too cold to account for the X-rays observed." That said, Uman added, "It’s obviously happening. And we have put limits on how it’s happening and where it’s happening." In new research, Uman and colleagues have taken a step forward in their understanding: As lightning comes down from a cloud, it moves in steps, each 30 to 160 feet long. In this "step leader" process, X-rays shoot out just below each step millionths of a second after the step completes, the researchers learned.

The finding, based on lightning created in a lab and detailed online this week in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, could eventually lead to better predictions of lightning. "A spark that begins inside a thunderstorm somehow manages to travel many miles to the ground, where it can hurt people and damage property," said Uman’s colleague Joseph Dwyer, a professor in the department of physics and space sciences at Florida Institute of Technology.

"Now, for the first time, we can actually detect lightning moving toward the ground using X-rays. So just as medical X-rays provide doctors with a clearer view inside patients, X-rays allow us to probe parts of the lightning that are otherwise very difficult to measure." But challenges remain. "From a practical point of view, if we are going to ever be able to predict when and where lightning will strike, we need to first understand how lightning moves from one place to the other," Dwyer said.

Want to buy a high-end computer system with extremely powerful gaming experience, then take a look at GIGABYTE Motherboards with Extreme Overclocking Performance. This board has been designed for extreme overclocking performance, the EP45-EXTREME series of motherboards support Intel multi-core processors up to FSB 1600MHz, including the latest Intel 45nm processors. Other high bandwidth features include support for ATI CrossFireX Technology with 2 PCI Express 2.0 x 8 interfaces and dual LAN with teaming functionality for ultra bandwidth for gaming servers.

GIGABYTE’s Hybrid Silent-Pipe slot cooling system utilises the natural convection of air inside and outside the chassis to dramatically and noiselessly cool down the North Bridge, South Bridge and CPU MOSFETs without the use of a fan. The GIGABYTE Hybrid Silent-Pipe can also be used with water block cooling systems for additional enhanced thermal performance.

The EP45-Extreme boards incorporate an 80 Port Debug LED, overclocking alert LEDs, overvoltage alert LEDs and also temperature alert LEDs. There are five blue overclocking alert LEDs that indicate from a minimal overclock with only one LED burning to a high overclock with five LEDs burning. There are three overvoltage alert LEDs that indicate a slight overvolt when the green one burns, a moderate overvolt when the yellow one burns, and a high overvolt when the red one burns. Finally, there are two temperature LEDs that burn green when the CPU and North Bridge area temperature is between 61C and 80C and red when the area is above 80C.

GIGABYTE EP45-Extreme motherboards also include Hardware Overvoltage Control ICs that provide more voltage control options than before for the CPU North Bridge and memory. The overvoltage controllers also provide hardware linear voltage control, which means there is no delay compared to the GPIO controller in past implementations. The ICs also allow for much finer voltage control, allowing power users to adjust voltage in smaller increments of as little as 20mV (or 0.002V) for better overclocking and tweaking.

The motherboards are equipped with a 12 + 2 + 2 Phase power design for the CPU VRM, North Bridge and memory, offering overclockers a more stable supply of power that can ultimately help to achieve higher CPU and memory frequencies with better performance.

For years, banks have had to fall back on their own experience to gauge consumer’s credit worthiness. However, in the last few years, things have started to change for the better.

Lenders now are armed with your credit report provided by Cibil (Credit Information Bureau India Limited) that has all the pertinent details of your credit pattern (loans and credit cards). More importantly, since this data is collated from across the country, whether you have defaulted in Mangalore or in Mumbai, you are still on the radar.

And when you apply for a loan or a credit card, lenders call for a copy of credit report from Cibil before considering your case. This report has a credit score that is arrived at by analysing your repayment record, outstanding debt, credit enquiries, amount of credit limit utilised and various other parameters.

Though prima facie, two individual cases may look similar, their credit scores may differ owing to other factors like age, income, number of dependents and other factors. In short, this credit report contains the complete snapshot of your credit history.

indian-rupees-bank-loan-sanctioning

This is an important tool at the hands of the lenders because it is a known fact that risk perceptions change for different borrowers. And this is determined by borrower’s credit history.

This is a significant change because now banks need not depend on their own experiences to assess the credit worthiness of the borrowers. What it just needs to do is track your past record from Cibil. Also, it would help banks to be in a position where they can distinguish between the qualities of customers. Till now, they were offering same interest rates. Now they can offer customers, with a good credit history, incentives to bank with them.

Further, a good credit score puts you on the higher pedestal before any lender, you may be offered softer rates.

This system is quite prevalent abroad, where banks and financial institutions have access to a database that contains the following:

List of credit cards
Typically, Cibil collates data on credit worthiness of all borrowers provided by member banks, financial institutions and credit card issuing agencies. Based on this, it prepares the Customer Information Report and then assigns a score to it which enables lenders make objective decisions.

It is therefore important that you do not spoil your credit score by making late or missing payments or having too many outstanding loans or even loan requests as your credit score is an indication of your financial health.
Payment history of credit cards and other loans
Regular payment history of rents and other utility bills
Savings accounts history, including bounced cheques
Total outstanding debts
Available credit on the cards

Further, if you feel that the credit score is not correct or unfair, then you can first approach the bank that has reported you to the Cibil. Also, you can complaint to Cibil directly to rectify the situation.

Women with high blood pressure are more likely to be obese and have high cholesterol levels. They’re also less likely than men to meet target goals for their blood pressure. And they’re also less likely than men to receive medications such as aspirin, blood pressure-lowering drugs or cholesterol-lowering drugs, compared to men, recent research found.

Most people don’t know that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women - as well as men. An estimated 480,000 women die of cardiovascular disease every year, more than the total number of cardiovascular disease-related deaths in men, or the next four causes of death combined, according to the heart association.

womenface-numerous

Unchecked high blood pressure - also known as hypertension - can produce terrible systemic damage and disease. It can lead to a heart attack, stroke, heart failure, kidney damage, blindness and a host of other medical problems.

Until then, following a healthy lifestyle and sticking with a good medication are a woman’s - and man’s - best bet for beating back high blood pressure.

"We know that a diet that is low in sodium and high in fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products is very useful in both preventing and treating high blood pressure," Researchers said.

Plans for a large human trial of a promising government-developed H.I.V. vaccine in the United States were canceled Thursday because a top federal official said scientists realized that they did not know enough about how H.I.V. vaccines and the immune system interact.

The decision is a major setback in an effort to develop an H.I.V. vaccine that began 24 years ago when government health officials promised a marketed vaccine by 1987. Health officials have long contended that such a vaccine would be their best weapon to control the AIDS pandemic.

A number of other H.I.V. vaccines are in various stages of testing around the world. But there had been high hopes for the government’s trial because the potential vaccine was among a new class that sought to stimulate the immune system in a different way.

The official who canceled the government trial, Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said it was becoming clearer that more fundamental research and animal testing would be needed before an H.I.V. vaccine was ever marketed.

Hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles are still 15 years away from becoming a viable business for automakers even if they overcome remaining technical hurdles and the U.S. government provides massive subsidies, a government-funded report said on Thursday.

Under a best-case scenario, automakers will only be able to sell about 2 million electric vehicles powered by fuel cells by 2020, according to the study by the National Research Council. That would mean that less than 1 percent of the vehicles on U.S. roads by that date would be powered by fuel cells.

In 2003, President George W. Bush had proposed spending $1.2 billion to develop fuel cells and infrastructure. At that time, Bush said the first cars driven by American children born in that year and reaching driving age by 2020 could be fuel cell vehicles.

Fuel Cell Cars , the latest technology

In 2005, Congress asked the National Research Council to study how much federal spending and other support would be needed to shift a "significant percentage" of new cars to fuel-cell technology by 2020.

General Motors Corp, Honda Motor Co and other automakers are in the process of testing limited fleets of hydrogen-powered fuel-cell cars.

Advocates see the still-emerging technology as a way to cut oil use and carbon dioxide emissions since fuel cells combine stored hydrogen with oxygen to produce electricity. As a result, fuel-cell vehicles emit only water vapor.

But many environmental advocates argue that hybrids and fully battery-powered electric vehicles, such as the upcoming Chevrolet Volt from GM, are the most reliable and cheapest ways to reduce oil consumption in the short term.

Microsoft never lets a new technology go unchallenged. While it already owns a multi-OS file synchronization tool, the very capable Windows Live Foldershare, that’s not enough to take on newbies such as SugarSync, Syncplicity, and DropBox, which not only sync but also offer online backup and access to the same files from other computers. Live Mesh is Microsoft’s long-in-development answer; it was announced earlier this year.

The Live Mesh software/service is now available to all--okay, anyone with a Windows Live ID--as of today. It is currently limited to Windows users, but Mac and Linux are promised for the future.

Saying "sync" isn’t enough for Redmond, though. They call it an "app platform that’s cognizant of all of your devices." (That according to Ray Ozzie, Microsoft’s Chief Software Architect.) That "all your devices" bit is the key.

microsoft_live_mesh-preview

Microsoft wants Live Mesh and its Mesh Operating Environment (hey, MOE) to be a platform not just for computers but also cameras, phones, digital photo frames--whatever you store files on, it would make sense to have those files shared and backed up on multiple systems. The Live Desktop aspect allows access from any Internet capable PC; the folders in it can be worked with just like a local folder. You can see a full slideshow of what Live Mesh is on PCMag.com.

Why is Microsoft keeping Windows Live Foldershare alive if Live Mesh does the same thing? Search me. Maybe for a time when it might charge for Live Mesh, so you’ll still have a free synchronization option. If it doesn’t charge for Live Mesh, there won’t be much point to Foldershare at all. Live Mesh has been in development since 2006 and will definitely start out as something for consumers. You can also read aguide to Live Mesh from the Microsoft PR wonks over at Scribd.

Mohammad Asif being found guilty of using an illegal substance during the inaugural Indian Premier League has yet again raised the spectre over the use of banned substances in a game once known as the gentleman’s game.

Interestingly though, medical experts do not believe that using banned substances can particularly help a cricketer boost his performance majorly in any way. “We shouldn’t forget that cricket is a game of skills where fitness plays a small but decisive role,” sports medicine expert Dr Kinjal Suratwala, who has worked with various sports persons, including cricketers, told the Hindustan Times. “The use of such substances would likely be counter-productive in the long run.”

Mohammed Asif pakistani cricket player

Mumbai Ranji Trophy team doctor Dr Deepak Kachalia agreed, saying that using drugs may help a player, but only short term. “For instance, steroids may help a player hide his injury,” he said. “But it does not heal his body, it just reduces pain. So you are carrying the injury and the possibility of aggravating it is more if a player is using steroids (as the injury is masked).”

Elaborating this view, Suratwala said: “It may help expand and strengthen muscles for a short period of time. But those who indulge in it don’t realize that instead of reduction in injuries, they get more injuries by indulging in the use of drugs.”

A mid-level Blonde executive was so frustrated at being passed over for promotion year after year, that, in frustration, he went to a brain-transplant center in the hope of raising his I.Q. 20 points.

After a battery of physical and psychological tests, he was told by the center’s director that he was an acceptable candidate.

“That’s great!” the executive said. “But I understand that this procedure can be really expensive.”

“Yes, sir, it can,” the director replied. “An ounce of accountant’s brain for example, costs one thousand dollars; an ounce of an economist’s brain costs two thousand; an ounce of a corporate president’s is forty-five thousand. An ounce of a Democrat’s brain is seventy-five thousand dollars.”

“Seventy-five thousand dollars for an ounce of a Democrat’s brain? Why on earth is that?”

“Do you have any idea,” the director asked, “how many Democrats we would have to kill to get an ounce?”

Yahoo! has introduced a new open Web services platform -- Yahoo! Search BOSS (Build Your Own Search Service) -- that will let third parties significant access to Yahoo! Search Technology, including the ability to re-rank and control the presentation of Web search results, as well as allows for control over unlimited queries per day.

Its framework allows developers to blend Yahoo! Search results from Web, news and image indexes with any data source from across the Web. Over time, other Yahoo! Search indexes will become available. The company is also planning to add monetisation capability to BOSS, enabling partners and developers to create a search revenue stream for their business.

"Today, the search market is generally limited to three major search engines to drive innovation and growth," said Prabhakar Raghavan, chief strategist, Yahoo! Search. "BOSS opens up the playing field for developers and companies to disrupt the search market, become principals in search and build new Web search experiences that offer more choice for users."

BOSS will offer two options for companies and developers. Today, developers can begin using the BOSS API and the mash-up framework tools and see examples of how they could deploy BOSS on their sites by visiting the Yahoo! Developer Network site, http://developer.yahoo.com/boss. The self-service API allows developers to quickly get started in creating new Web search experiences.

India’s Vindhyan Basins have hidden their age well-by as much as 500 million years, according to controversial new research.

The basins, which stretch across a 39,000-square-mile (100,000-square-kilometer) swath of central India, were initially believed to have formed about 500 to 700 million years ago after Earth’s crust stretched, thinned, and then faulted.

Vindya satpura mountain basins

Six of the basins studied, however, show evidence that they were created a billion years ago, said study lead author Joseph Meert, a geology professor at the University of Florida.

The drastic age revision offers new evidence for the "snowball Earth" hypothesis, which says that Earth’s surface was completely covered with snow and ice about 700 million years ago, according to the scientists. It may also lend some support to claims that multicellular organisms found in the region date to 1.6 billion years ago, several hundred million years before most scientists believe such creatures developed.

The team made their new age assessment after stumbling across kimberlite-a type of volcanic mineral often laced with diamonds-in vertical channels running down into Earth’s mantle. Researchers dated the kimberlite to about 1.073 billion years ago using radioactive decay.

The scientists also documented the rocks’ magnetic orientation, since rocks containing magnetic, iron-bearing minerals typically orient themselves with Earth’s magnetic poles as they crystallize. "If you look at old rocks, the pole position can be all over the place-not because the pole has moved but because the rocks have moved," said Syracuse University geology professor M.E. Bickford, who was not affiliated with the new study. The magnetic orientations of rocks from 56 other sites scattered throughout the basin were consistent with the kimberlite, the researchers found.

Wipro chairman Mr. Azim Premji’s comment on reservation:

I think we should have job reservations in all the fields. I completely support the PM and all the politicians for promoting this. Let’s start the reservation with our cricket team. We should have 10 percent reservation for Muslims. 30 percent for OBC , SC /ST like that. Cricket rules should be modified accordingly.

The boundary circle should be reduced for an SC/ST player. The four hit by an OBC player should be considered as a six and a six hit by an OBC player should be counted as 8 runs. An OBC player scoring 60 runs should be declared as a century.

We should influence ICC and make rules so that the pace bowlers like Shoaib Akhtar should not bowl fast balls to our OBC player.

Bowlers should bowl maximum speed of 80 km/ hour to an OBC player.

Any delivery above this speed should be made illegal.

Also we should have reservation in Olympics. In the 100 meters race, an OBC player should be given a gold medal if he runs 80 meters.

There can be reservation in Government jobs also. Let’s recruit SC/ST and OBC pilots for aircrafts which are carrying the ministers and politicians (that can really help the country…)

Ensure that only SC/ST and OBC doctors do the operations for the ministers and other politicians.. (Another way of saving the country…)

Let’s be creative and think of ways and means to guide INDIA forward…
Let’s show the world that INDIA is a GREAT country.
Let’s be proud of being an INDIAN…

May the good breed of politicians like ARJUN SINGH long live…

“Education’s purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one.”

Beauty is the boon to most of the teens, and we can improve it by following some simple tips as below.

1. Hair
2. Skin
3. Fitness
4. Cosmetics
5. Nail Care
6. Fashion

Hair. A good haircut and styling can make your whole look. Our society is multicultural, so we have a mixed definition of beautiful hair. Companies are now producing hair care products that are tailored to every type of hair. Whether you have curly, frizzy, straight, oily or dry hair there is a hair care product line for you. There are hair colouring treatments, hair straightening treatments and perm products that available to take home. Even the men have colouring treatments to hide their grey hairs.

Men tend to have it easy when it comes to hair since most of them have shorter haircuts that don’t require too much maintenance, but there is a huge demand for products related to hair loss. Even though hair loss affects women, genetically men deal with this challenge the most.

top six sexy beauty secrets

Skin. Is beauty synonymous with youth? If you look at skin care you would definitely think so. As we age we lose moisture in our skin but the beauty of the skin can be restored by products that slough off the old skin cells and apply nanotechnology to penetrate the skin.

Fitness. True beauty does not mean you have to be razor thin but being fit and active is the cornerstone to a healthy body. Though dieting and weight loss get a lot of attention getting into a regular exercise routine will help you define the look of your body. Depending on your age and health, you can be as aggressive as you want in defining your exercise and fitness goals.

Cosmetics. Makeup can be used to enhance a person’s appearance. As we age we definitely need that ‘concealer’ that we hardly used in our youth. Cosmetics can be a great tool to highlight our face but they can be very expensive and, in the wrong hands, can actually detract from our appearance, so use them wisely.

Nail care. Within the last 10 years we have definitely seen a jump in the amount of nail salons. They can’t be missed at your local mall. Manicures and pedicures definitely can make you feel beautiful and pampered. The hands, in particular, stand out in your everyday interaction with others. Are you more apt to remember someone with a great manicure or not?

Fashion. Is it too late to wear white? ‘Boot cut’ or ’straight cut’ jeans? Every morning we have to decide how and whether what we wear will affect how others think we look. We get our cues from the latest magazines and what people are wearing on our favourite shows. The creative among us can define their own styles.

If you want to look and feel beautiful, be sure to focus on these six keys to beauty and how they relate to you. Some of us may need more help in one area than another depending on what nature gave us, but we should always make the most of the beauty assets we have been given.

The Buddha explained how to handle insult and maintain compassion.

One day Buddha was walking through a village. A very angry and rude young man came up and began insulting him. “You have no right teaching others,” he shouted. “You are as stupid as everyone else. You are nothing but a fake.”

Buddha was not upset by these insults. Instead he asked the young man “Tell me, if you buy a gift for someone, and that person does not take it, to whom does the gift belong?”
The man was surprised to be asked such a strange question and answered, “It would belong to me, because I bought the gift.”

The Buddha smiled and said, “That is correct. And it is exactly the same with your anger. If you become angry with me and I do not get insulted, then the anger falls back on you. You are then the only one who becomes unhappy, not me. All you have done is hurt yourself.”

“If you want to stop hurting yourself, you must get rid of your anger and become loving instead. When you hate others, you yourself become unhappy. But when you love others, everyone is happy.”

The young man listened closely to these wise words of the Buddha. “You are right, o Enlightened One, “he said. “Please teach me the path of love. I wish to become your follower.”

The Buddha answered kindly, “Of course. I teach anyone who truly wants to learn. Come with me.”

Mega-corporations hire "white hat" hackers to seek vulnerable sensitive data so that they can add protection before the bad guys steal it. Now you can do the same for personal private data on your own computer, using Identity Finder Professional Edition 3.4. This version has been substantially improved over Identity Finder 2.1. It scans for more types of personal information, seeks in more places, works faster, and doesn’t crash like the old version. The Office 2007-style user interface looks similar to the older version’s, but the app is now both richer and easier to use.

Identity finder

Identity Finder (IDF) can locate some kinds of personal information without knowing any specifics about you. Its AnyFind technology seeks Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, bank account numbers, and passwords by matching data patterns and context. AnyFind now also automatically locates birth dates and national ID numbers (SSN equivalents) for Canada, Australia, and the U.K. You’ll still want to enter one or more specific values for these types, and you may want to enter your own information for data types not handled by AnyFind, which include driver’s license, address, passport, phone number, and mother’s maiden name, among others.

For decades, researchers have searched for an immunity super booster that could hold back the tide of disease. In Indian spice bazaars, they may have found it.

It’s a scorchingly hot day, and I’m in the middle of a steamy, mosquito-harried field in sweaty southern India. A farmer, wearing just a loincloth, a drenched gray turban, and a molasses-hued tan, emerges and comes down a row of waist high plants. His angular face is hard to read, but I can see he’s gripping a tall walking stick. I’m a stranger, a trespasser who considers leaving. But I’ve traveled 8,300 miles in 18 hours to stand amid the green shoots that rise as benignly as bunny ears.

Turmeric-Indian gold-Cures Cancer 012

I extend a hand and the farmer grasps it, but remains wary until my interpreter finishes explaining why I’m here. "Yes, turmeric," says the man, suddenly breaking into a broad grin. His name is Kuriakose, a 62-yearold who has spent his life farming rural tracts like this. He does not know of the mounting evidence that his crop may be an ancient antidote to the plague of prostate cancer, or that the active compound in turmeric-curcumin-may also relieve or prevent a dozen other chronic maladies, including diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease.

He does know this: his mother peppered every dish with a pinch of "Indian gold"; that turmeric’s luminous, knuckled root is what colors his curries yellow; that his grandmother made him gargle a turmeric concoction for colds and sprinkled it on skin cuts. He knows all he needs to: "Turmeric is in me," he says. "It’s a part of me."

Turmeric-Indian gold-Cures Cancer 0544

In the West, researchers have suspected Curcuma longa to be more than just a spice that doubles as a home remedy. But only recently has turmeric been subjected to the rigours of 21st-century science. In the 1990s, researchers from the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, in Houston, investigated curcumin’s anti-inflammatory properties to see if the compound could stop a tumor in its tracks. "We grabbed a pinch of turmeric and tossed it on some cancer cells," says Bharat Aggarwal, PhD. "The effect was staggering." It blocked a biological pathway needed for the development of melanoma and other cancers- including prostate tumors.

In 2007, Chinese scientists reported that curcumin could also play a key role in prostate-cancer treatment by dampening hormones implicated in the startup of the disease. That same year, University of Alabama researchers discovered that combining curcumin with traditional radiation therapy destroyed prostate-cancer cells that had previously become radiation resistant. Researchers at the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit found that curcumin could weaken malignant prostate cells in a way that turned otherwise ineffective immunotherapeutic agents into tumor killers.

Epidemiologist studies showed that India, the country that produces and consumes most of the world’s turmeric, also has one of the world’s lowest prostate-cancer rates-lower even than famously cancer-scarce Japan. In fact, according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, a mere five out of 100,000 Indian men develop the disease annually. Genetics might explain some of this, but Subhash Gautam, PhD, an immunologist with Henry Ford Health System, believes India’s high turmeric consumption and low prostate-cancer rate is no coincidence: "It’s highly plausible that eating three meals a day, each with a spoonful of turmeric-as Indian men have done for thousands of years-could be chemo preventive."

Finally, there was the discovery that turmeric could be safely tolerated in doses so high that it was virtually overdose-proof.

"It’s mind-boggling," says Aggarwal. "Turmeric is safe, and as far as the number of diseases it addresses, you name it."

Despite such praise, some skepticism is in order. Say if turmeric is indeed so miraculous, why haven’t we heard more about it? Why aren’t we seeing commercials with beautiful people romping through meadows of turmeric? In short, is turmeric really a wonder spice-or is it just another herbal fad?

LOVE can make you blind, quite literally. In a research, 57 students in heterosexual relationships were asked to write about occasions when they felt extreme love towards their partner. Another 56 students wrote about feeling extreme happiness.

The students then viewed 500-microsecond flashes of 60 photos, comprising equal numbers of highly attractive and average-looking men and women. As the faces disappeared, they had to rapidly identify shapes that appeared on the screen - a measure of their subconscious visual attention to the photos.

sex-Love-dating-teens-hot

Students primed with thoughts of love took significantly less time to identify shapes after viewing an attractive face of the opposite sex, compared with those who had written essays on happiness. It was as if being in love meant that they were "repelled, rather than grabbed", by attractive faces. This may help explain why people in love do not seek out other mates

Do you know that stem cells from human teech can be coaxed into becoming sperm by injected it into the testes of Mice. Its is amazing to know about the stem cell research.

Irina Kerkis of the Butantan Institute in São Paulo and her colleagues injected stem cells from the dental pulp of human teeth into the testes of live mice. The cells seemed to migrate to the tubules where sperm usually mature and differentiate into cells resembling human sperm.

sperm_egg_stem cells research-images

However, the process was inefficient and some of the human cells fused with mouse cells - a problem that would have to be solved before the technique could be used therapeutically. The cells were also taken from baby teeth, so it is unclear if the approach would work with teeth from adult men.

"I think we are on the right track, but we need to understand more about the mechanism," says Kerkis, whose team presented the results at the meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Barcelona, Spain, on 9 July.

It takes human sperm several weeks to develop, yet the Brazilian team’s cells seemed to have matured within nine days. Given that human sperm stem cells have previously failed to mature in mouse testes, it seems unlikely that dental cells would fare better, adds Robin Lovell-Badge of the National Institute for Medical Research in London.

6. Guinea - 10,000-franc note. U.S. value: $2.33 only. In 2002, the mineral-rich African country refused to implement reforms mandated by the International Monetary Fund; foreign cash dried up, and the central bank printed too much money.

Food-Pyramid-Eat less to live more

According to the Bible, Adam lived for hundreds of years, and in Hindu mythology lifespans of thousands of years are commonplace. Perhaps this is because the ancients ate no junk food and got more exercise herding their cattle. They didn’t have as much to eat. Yoga masters, for instance, heirs of an ancient healing tradition, will tell you to stop eating before you feel full. It’s long been thought that restricting food intake can extend lifespan.

In a 1930s US study, rats on a calorie-restricted diet were found to live twice as long as normal. Those findings have since been tested on other animals and found to hold generally true. However, there has been no scientific evidence until now to show that the same holds true in humans.

The mechanisms of ageing are still not understood, but the thinking goes that consuming less means the body can more efficiently break down and absorb nutrients, minimizing the storage of excess as fat. This helps stabilize blood sugar levels, reduces strain on the organs, and also means less free radicals, hence lower oxidative damage (suspected of causing cancers).

But just eating less is not enough: one has to eat nutritious food and live a healthy lifestyle. Simply eating too little can cause malnutrition, which actually speeds up aging.

Green_Tea_Extract-reduces heart disease

Greek Researcher found that a few cups of green tea every day helps prevent heart disease. A study published in the European Journal of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation showed further evidence of the potential health benefits from a brew already linked to a reduced risk of a range of cancers and other conditions.

The study showed that green tea improves blood flow and the ability of arteries to relax, said Charalambos Vlachopoulos, a cardiologist at the Athens Medical School in Greece who worked on the study. Other studies have shown that black tea also has benefits for cardiovascular health.

The Greek team said they believed green tea might be even better because it had higher quantities of beneficial compounds called flavonoids -- some of which are lost in the oxidation process that black tea undergoes. Flavonoids are also found in cocoa, tomatoes and grapes.

But, Green tea is consumed less in the Western world than black tea, but it could be more beneficial because of the way it seems to improve (circulatory) function. But, Asians consume Green Tea daily and get benefited from its medicinal effects.

So, the next time, when you get a chance of having a Green Tea, drink it happily to reduce your change of getting heart disease.

Firefox-internetexplorer-competition

Software giant Microsoft announced on Tuesday that the next revision of Internet Explorer 8, beta 2, will have two new security features: the SmartScreen Filter, and the Cross Site Scripting (XSS) filter. Microsoft is announcing that this two new security features will appear in next beta version of IE8. SmartScreen Filter previously went by the name Safety Filter and in IE7, Phishing Filter.

The new filters will protect against a broader range of threats, "analyzing the full URL string, providing detection that is more granular, resulting in IE8’s ability to protect against more targeted and sophisticated attacks" according to a company representative. It will also warn users when they’re about to download known malware. Details on SmartScreen Filter can be found on Microsoft’s Internet Explorer Blog.

The second new security feature, the Cross Site Scripting filter, addresses a type of threat that is becoming prevalent among Internet attacks. These result from a security hole left by some popular sites, and can enable attackers to steal cookies, which can lead to account hijacking. The attacks can also monitor keystroke input to the victim Web site, and perform actions on the victim Web site on behalf of the victimized user. "For example, an XSS attack on Windows Live Mail might enable an attacker to read and forward e-mail messages, set new calendar appointments, et cetera," the spokesman said.

The filter works by monitoring and blocking such scripts from working. The user will not have to answer a "what do you want to do?" question in a dialog box. Instead, the attack will be stopped, and a notification bar will appear at the top of the browser window. More details on the Cross Site Scripting filter can be found in this entry on Microsoft’s IE Blog.

Thanks in part to the Guinness Book-making Download Day debut of Firefox 3, Mozilla’s popular browser has managed to secure an overall marketshare of 19 percent.

According to numbers released by Web survey company, Net Applications, the third major revamp of the open-source browser has scored a four percent global share since its mid-June release. That number got bumped by a full one percent in the first hour after the browser lost its beta tag.

The majority of Firefox 3’s jump came from upgrading Firefox 2 users rather than first-time Internet Explorer defectors. Microsoft’s browser still clings to the lion’s share of the browser market, though its numbers slipped slightly from 73.17 percent at the beginning of June to 72.90 percent the week of June 22. The numbers are slightly more dramatic on a larger scale -back in August 2007, IE commanded 79 percent of the market.

A Beta 2 version of Internet Explorer 8 is being slated for an August release. Firefox 3 currently holds the Top Choice for browsers.

iit-medak-student protest agains caste based reservation

The alumni as well as the students of IIT have come together and called out for a peaceful candle light procession on 5 July 2008, in different cities of India, including New Delhi, Bengaluru and Mumbai against the central government’s directive of implementing 50 % reservation in IIT faculty. They have raised several questions on this issue. According to the IITians, the government is playing with the autonomy of institutes of national importance especially IITs, IIMs and AIIMS. The government has recently enforced 50 per cent faculty reservation in IITs with ’immediate effect’; it is a matter of time when this rule is enforced in IIMs, medical institutions and other colleges.

"The definition of creamy layer is being modified to people having more than 5 lakh annual income which is completely illogical and in defiance of the spirit of Supreme Court order," says an IITian. "The ruling that graduates and above should not get quota has been blatantly overruled by the government. Reservation in the faculty of IITs implies that the government considers even PhDs as backwards."

An alumni of IIT says, "The protests are also to express displeasure over the way Arjun Singh has single-handedly destroyed whatever reputable was there about the Indian education system. The Supreme Court judgments have been interpreted and implemented in their own bizarre ways. The autonomy has been snatched from almost all Indian institutions of excellence. And the final nail in the coffin of excellence came in the form of the draconian directive of implementing 50 per cent reservation in the IIT faculty."

The IITians said that they want to initiate an organised struggle against government’s caste-based reservation policies. Historically, protests have at least temporarily stopped the government’s nefarious designs. If we remain quiet today, that day is not far away when reservations would be implemented even in the private sector. And we would be left with no option but to leave our beloved nation, according to the IITians.

A British study showed that 20 hypertensive people needed 37 minutes to finish a maths test that healthy controls banged out in 10. Stress made the difference; it’s hard to concentrate when the blood vessels in your head are throbbing like a bass drum. Those 20 people won’t be bungling arithmetic much past their 50s, though. Even slightly high blood pressure-say, a reading around 135/185mm Hg-can cut off your life span.

1 Eat your girlfriend’s breakfast
Have papaya and yoghurt; they’re high in potassium that helps control BP. A study with 2,600 subjects found that taking 2gm of potassium daily-eat a baked potato, a large banana and 250ml of milk-reduced BP by up to 4 points in five weeks.

2 Let her talk herself out
Arguing can cause your BP to skyrocket. But a study in Health Psychology found that during marital disagreements, men’s BP remained normal when they were calm. It rose when their persuasive skills were being judged, and they began yelling. Let her do the yelling; you keep the investments in your name.

3 Avoid extra stress in the morning
Men usually have heart attacks in the morning, and one reason is that your BP stays elevated by at least 15 points until about 11am. Try to avoid regular causes of stress in the morning. Schedule weekly staff meetings after lunch and straighten your desk every night so you won’t face a disaster site the next morning.

Stress in Face

4 Drink more orange juice
In a British study of 541 adults, those with the highest blood levels of vitamin C had the lowest BP. Researchers believe that vitamin C helps blood vessels dilate. You can get your RDA of 60mg of vitamin C by eating broccoli, peppers and citrus fruits.

5 Reduce intake of pickled vegetables
One pickled cucumber contains 1.7gm of sodium. Studies have found that about half of all hypertensive men see a drop in BP when they reduce sodium intake, so it can’t hurt to keep yours below 2.4gm per day. Sodium may cause hypertension by adding fluid to blood and constricting artery walls.

6 Cut down on coffee
People had a 2-3 point rise in BP during the workday after they took caffeine pills that equated one cup of coffee at breakfast and one at lunch, according to a study at Duke University. If you won’t give up java, keep it to one cup.

7 Answer to one boss at a time
Avoiding job stress helps control BP. In a study of 195 men, reducing work stress lowered BP by 10 points in hypertensive men and by 5 points in men with normal BP. A common source of frustration is trying to please several supervisors, says study leader Peter Schnall, MD, of the University of California.

8 Go omega
When overweight study subjects ate 115gm of fish every day, their BP dropped by six points within four months. The protein and omega-3 fatty acids in fish help keep arteries elastic, says study author Trevor A Mori, PhD, of the University of Western Australia.

9 Have a cup of ice-cream
This gives you 150-200mg of calcium. A Japanese study found that hypertensive people who took a 1gm calcium supplement daily for eight weeks reduced their resting BP by 1-2 points. Calcium seems to help artery walls stay flexible. Drinking a few glasses of milk each day will help, too.

10 Do something really, really boring
A three-month study of 100 people found that those who meditated for 20 minutes daily lowered their average resting BP by 11 points after 12 weeks. Buy a fish tank; watching tropical fish may lower BP. Introduce a few predators and it will remind you of law school.

Bollywood Hot movie Review

Here is a collection that presents the Bollywood films that had a biggest hits in the year 2008. Some of the biggest movie taken under perview are Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, Mere Baap Pehle Aap, Sarkar Raj, Bhoothnath, Tashan, U Me Aur Hum, Krazzy 4, Jodhaa Akbar, Jannat and Race.

"It’s that time of the year to evaluate the Bollywood releases, in the past six months.

We’ve seen some big banner releases like Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, Mere Baap Pehle Aap, Sarkar Raj, Bhoothnath, Tashan, U Me Aur Hum, Krazzy 4, Jodhaa Akbar, Jannat and Race. Unfortunately, only a handful have been successful at the box office. We take a look at the biggest hits of 2008, so far.

Trade analysts unanimously agree that Abbas-Mustan’s Race was the top grosser of the year so far. There were a lot of things going for it. Race was a good thriller, with a lot of action and twist; the film starred stunning actresses like Katrina Kaif, Bipasha Basu and Sameera Reddy; and it had some of Pritam’s best music.

"It has been a very poor beginning for the year, as the industry has been slumping," Taran Adarsh, trade analyst, says. "The industry is in a critical condition. We have had a quantum of releases but unfortunately, most of them were flops. There were few hits."

"The industry seems to have lost direction," Vinod Mirani, rediff.com’s trade analyst tells us. "Creativity is nil. Most films are remakes of foreign movies and badly adapted. Local distributors, who dared to invest, lost money even if the producer did not."

manisha-koirala-12-hot actress in bollywood
Bollywood actress Manisha Koirala is enjoying so extensively with golfer-boyfriend Chris. And so, she won’t be here on July 11 when her long-delayed musical Mehbooba releases.

On that day the Bengali and Hindi versions of Rituparno Ghosh’s Khela, featured by Manisha, gets released as well. Manisha has not dubbed for either version of Khela, not even in Hindi. She has been travelling extensively and we just couldn’t wait any longer.

"Manisha is the most easygoing, obedient, disciplined and hassle-free actress I’ve worked with. Believe me, I’ve worked with the most temperamental Bengali actresses in the world. I had heard Manisha is difficult. Not true at all. She just surrendered to my vision. Ajay Devgan used to tell me Manisha is like a man on the sets. She gets ready for a shot in three minutes. I’ve worked with actresses who have failed to get ready even after three hours of makeup," Ghosh says.

"She’s so lovely and I know exactly what I want to do with her in my next film. In Khela, she has a very interesting role as the neglected wife of a self-centred actor."

"Khela is about a film unit that wants a particular child for a role. When the parents refuse, the boy gets in touch with the film’s hero and suggests they kidnap him because he wants to do the film. The hero (Prosenjeet) and the film’s art director (Raima Sen) do just that." Khela will be Ghosh’s first Hindi-Bengali bilingual. But he has another one, Sunglass, coming up very soon.

Lion Tiger Myths Facts

The tiger is the largest of the cats and is a perfect killing machine with a superior combination of power, cunning and agility. On the other hand, A lion has an appearance to frighten even the mightiest of animals. There have been some real fights between the two kings of the jungle. So, what do the evidences and experts (and common sense) say about who will win a fight between the two, or rather, if there are 100 tiger-lion fights which one will have more victories?

Myth 1: The lion has a stronger forequarter
The fact is, the lion has slightly more massively built shoulders and the tiger has more developed legs. Overall a tiger is more massively built than a lion. Even pound for pound, a tiger has anatomy-advantage over a lion in the forequarters.

Myth 2: The tiger hunts larger preys
The fact is, both these cats generally hunt similar sized preys (the size of wildebeast) and both these cats may go for larger preys once in a while. In some areas, these cats get ’specialized’ in hunting certain kinds of preys. In Nagarahole National Park in India, the tigers prefer to hunt the large gaurs.

Myth 3: The lion has more bite force
The fact is, pound for ponud, a tiger has more bite force qutient, though the difference is not huge.

Myth 4: Tigers are more ferocious
The fact is, There has never been such a claim by any scientist or noted animal observer. This is a bizare claim with no base. Both these animals show similar ferocity (of course, ferocity is not quantifiable) when drawn into a fight.

Myth 5: Lions have larger heads
The fact is, an average lion has (surprisingly) the same size of head as an average Bengal/Siberian/Indo-Chinese tiger. The tiger’s head is just a little wider and shorter, allowing it to have more bite force.

Myth 6: Lions just fight and tigers just hunt
The fact is, nomadic male lions hunt regularly and skillfully. Even resident male lions hunt sometimes. On the other hand, tigers fight, often to death, with other tigers. Tigers fight fairly often, so much so that around 30% of tiger deaths (for Bengal tigers) occur due to territorial fights. Also, tigers fight with leopards, bears, wild dogs, elephants etc. Most of the tiger vs tiger and lion vs lion fights end after one combatant escapes while some fights in both the cases may result in severe injury or death.

Myth 7: The lion has better fighting techniques
The fact is, the tiger shows better ’skills’ of fighting. It can swipe much faster than a lion, can use both the front legs at the same time for making swipes, is faster and more agile than the lion.

Computers population touches 1 billion

Do you know that the number of personal computers being used across the world has passed the one billion mark.

Gartner Inc. says that markets in Western Europe and the US account for 58 per cent of the first billion installed PCs but, adds that such markets will account for only about 30 per cent of the next billion.

The rise in the use of computers is being driven by Indian and Brazilian markets, says the firm. The rapid growth in the number of new PCs also means fast-growing number of obsolete computers.

According to the firm, over 180 million computers are expected to be replaced this year. While some computers will be sold on or recycled, large numbers will simply be buried.

Some 35 million PCs will be dumped into landfill with little or no regard for their toxic content. It will become an even more pressing issue, especially in emerging markets, as the number of retired PCs grows with the continuing expansion of the PC installed base. And the 70 per cent of the world’s discarded phones and computers are exported to China.

It also reveals that fact that earlier this year, dust in areas near Chinese e-waste recycling centres was shown to raise levels of lead, with some school grounds harbouring levels that would be illegal in Western countries.

The hunt for the remote is over! Soon your face will replace it. Yes, a budding scientist has evolved a way to speed up or slow video playback by using his face as a remote. The demonstration was part of a larger project to use automated facial expression recognition to make robots more effective teachers.

In a pilot study, University of California’s Jacob Whitehill, who conceptualised the project, demonstrated how facial expressions of people watching recorded video lectures could be used to predict his or her preferred viewing speed; or how difficult a person perceives the lecture at each moment.

"If I am a student dealing with a robot teacher and I am completely puzzled and yet the robot keeps presenting new material, that’s not going to be very useful to me," said Whitehill.

"If, instead, the robot stops and says, ’Oh, maybe you’re confused,’ and I say, ’Yes, thank you for stopping’ that’s really good," said Whitehill.

Beautiful hot cute girls

It is quite evident that women are fond of love novels. They are ready to read them everywhere, in the streets, in busses, on holidays, at home, etc.
What is so special about this kind of literature? Let us speak upon it a little. Thus, what is in women’s interest, when they read love novels? The answer may vary from love story to piquant details from the life of main characters.
What is more, is that women are longing for some romantic in their life, therefore they plunge into the world of fiction and take pleasure from, at least, reading about this mysterious feeling, as love.
However, a good advice will be to distinguish between reality and fiction, since most frequently women demand the same behaviour form their boy friends. When their boy friends are weighed and found wanting, women become very disappointed with it.
In this connection, if you do not want to be disappointed with your partner, you should not built illusions around him and should not try to make him better (to your mind) than he is.

Pondicherry

The flow of domestic and foreign tourists into the Union Territory (UT) has witnessed a significant increase in the last three years. The coastal town is slowly emerging as the preferable tourism destination in south India.

Projected as “Peaceful Puducherry,” the tourist arrivals in the Union Territory have grown with a number of tourism-friendly initiatives and intense promotional activities of the Tourism Department.

According to officials of the Directorate of Tourism, there were 36,009 foreign tourists in 2005. The inflow had increased to 46,273 in 2006 and 57,682 in 2007.

In the flow of domestic tourists, there were 5.74 lakh tourists in 2005 and over 6.52 lakh in 2006. The Union Territory received over 7.98 lakh domestic tourists in 2007, the directorate said.

“The Puducherry beach has emerged as the major attraction for visitors. This has been attracting repeat visitors. We have been taking efforts to enhance the tourism inflow through new projects such as beautifying the beach, development of Bharathi park and Paradise Island at Chunnambar,” an official of the Tourism directorate said.

Apart from the beach, the Aurobindo Ashram, Auroville, Chunnambar beach and heritage centres were the major attractions for tourists. “Tourists like the place as it is a well-planned city with a neat and clean beach area,” he pointed out.

With more projects on the anvil, Puducherry received maximum domestic tourists from Chennai and Bangalore during weekends. The inflow of foreign tourists from France and Germany was high, he added.

“Puducherry has a lot scope in the tourism industry. Thirty-one new hotels are coming up. The number of beds available for tourists is 7,000 now. This will increase to 8,000 in another year. The demand for accommodation is high, especially during weekends,” the official said.

Under promotional aspects, the directorate was participating in domestic and international tourism fairs. “We are undertaking intense marketing and this is one of the reasons for increased tourist inflow.”

Watermelon

According to recent studies, the juicy fruit, watermelon may be better suited for Valentine’s Day. Scientists say watermelon has ingredients that deliver Viagra-like effects to the body’s blood vessels and may even increase libido.

“The more we study watermelons, the more we realize just how amazing a fruit it is in providing natural enhancers to the human body,” said Dr. Bhimu Patil, director of Texas A&M’s. “We’ve always known that watermelon is good for you, but the list of its very important healthful benefits grows longer with each study.”

Beneficial ingredients in watermelon and other fruits and vegetables are known as phyto-nutrients, naturally occurring compounds that are bioactive, or able to react with the human body to trigger healthy reactions, Patil said.

In watermelons, these include lycopene, beta carotene and the rising star among its phyto-nutrients - citrulline - whose beneficial functions are now being unraveled. Among them is the ability to relax blood vessels, much like Viagra does.

“Watermelon may not be as organ specific as Viagra,” Patil said, “but it’s a great way to relax blood vessels without any drug side-effects.”

The benefits of watermelon don’t end there, he said. Arginine also helps the urea cycle by removing ammonia and other toxic compounds from our bodies.

“One final bit of advice for those Fourth of July watermelons you buy,” Patil said. “They store much better uncut if you leave them at room temperature. Lycopene levels can be maintained even as it sits on your kitchen floor. But once you cut it, refrigerate. And enjoy.”

Google isn’t just for researching information, finding the nearest bar, or viewing the popularity of your own name (c’mon, we know you do it). There’s so much more you can do. For example, you can use Google’s apps to check gas prices in your area, view street-level images of major cities, track packages, get flight statuses, etc.

Odds are you’re spending a lot of time on Google (we know we do) and we want it to be time well spent, so we asked the Google experts to compile a list of helpful Google Search tips and tricks, as well as shortcuts for Google Maps and Google Earth. These 20 Google tips and tricks will help you get the most out of your daily Web routine.-

1. Sky: Browse the universe at sky.google.com. Also available in Google Earth.

2. Search nearby: If you find a destination on the map-say, a hotel-in the info bubble, you can "search nearby" to find the businesses and attractions close by.

3. Use business name/category in directions search: Instead of looking up the address of a store and then having to get directions from one to the other, simply type "deli mountain view, ca TO ice cream mountain view ca," and the search results will provide you with a list of businesses to choose from and provide directions from point to point.

4. Public transit directions: Plan trips using public transportation at google.com/transit. For cities where transit is available, a search for directions will also provide the option for directions using public transit.

5. My Maps: Create your own maps by adding lines, markers, pictures, and videos to a Google Map. You can also collaborate on maps with friends (or the public), and make it publicly available or private.

6. Check gas prices: With mapplets like GasBuddy, you can see gas prices throughout your area. Go to maps.google.com, select "My Maps", and browse the directory for "Gas Prices by GasBuddy.com." There are plenty other useful and fun tools in the directory, such as AccuWeather.com Weather Snapshot, Area Calculator, and Real Estate Search.

7. Check traffic: In many cities across the country, Google provides real-time traffic information. For instance, type in "New York, NY" and click the "Traffic" button in the upper-right corner of the map to view traffic patterns, road closures, and construction sites. This feature is also available in Google Maps for Mobile.

8. Street view: View and navigate high-resolution, 360-degree street-level images of various U.S. cities. Just click the Street View button and drag the "person" icon onto a blue outlined street. Street View is also available for driving directions and in Google Earth.

9. Editing Google Maps: You can now add or edit business listing information to Google Maps.

10. Weather in Google Earth: Get weather forecasts, conditions, clouds, and radars in the "Weather" folder in the Google Earth layer menu
