E-Cigarette-newest-design

Although electronic cigarettes have recently been marketed as a safer alternative to traditional smokes, a new analysis of 19 types of the e-cigarettes revealed that they contain toxic chemicals. The FDA has classified the devices as combination drug/medical devices, prohibiting their import, but hasn’t removed them from American shelves. Opponents of e-cigarettes hope the findings will spur the FDA to take more stringent action against the devices.

The results of the FDA’s new analysis, which were announced yesterday, revealed that although e-cigarettes don’t burn tobacco, the devices contain substances known to be toxic, such as diethylene glycol, a component of antifreeze that proved deadly when it was illegally added to toothpaste. They also contain nitrosamines, known carcinogens found in tobacco smoke. The findings, which were announced, contradict claims by electronic cigarette manufacturers that their products are safe alternatives to tobacco and contain little more than water vapor, nicotine and propylene glycol, which is used to create artificial smoke in theatrical productions. When heated, the liquid produces a vapor that users inhale through the battery-powered device.

Most of the cigarettes are manufactured in China, and the FDA has halted more than 50 shipments into the United States–but that hasn’t made the devices unavailable in the United States. Health advocates note that the devices are sometimes marketed towards children because they come in flavors like bubblegum, chocolate and mint. E-cigarettes could get children hooked on nicotine and serve as a gateway to tobacco, says Jonathan Winickoff, chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Tobacco Consortium… He notes that the products are sold online and at shopping malls, where their marketing videos are seen by children and teens…. [Additionally], seeing adults use them in public places that are normally smoke-free could make kids think that smoking — of any kind — is normal and safe.

E-cigarette manufacturer Smoking Everywhere, however, says the FDA lacks the jurisdiction to control the sale of the cigs because they are not marketed as a product to help people quit smoking; the company sued the agency in April in an effort to stop the border seizures. And the Electronic Cigarette Association, an industry trade group, said in a statement that the F.D.A.’s testing was too “narrow to reach any valid and reliable conclusions” and that its members sell and market their products only to adults. The FDA has not said if, or how, the results of the analysis will affect the agency’s practices and policies toward e-cigarette manufacturers.

How do you think your career will change now that you’ve won two very well-deserved Oscars? I have been getting a lot of offers from Hollywood. A lot of my aspirations like I wanted to work with an orchestra are possible now. Collaborations are possible with pop artists and icons and all that stuff.

Do you plan to go West and work outside Bollywood? I think I partly want to do that, but I don’t want to just desert this place and go. It won’t be fair on my musicality. I will probably balance out both.

What was the difference between making the music for Slumdog Millionaire and the music for Indian films?

Each director [has] their own kind of rapport with other artists. When I work with Mani Ratnam, there’s one kind of rapport. When I work with Ashutosh Gowariker, it’s different. So with [Slumdog Millionaire director] Danny Boyle, automatically a different sense came in. He had his own taste of music and I was very interested in knowing what he liked about my music.

Do you believe in a universal music? I do, because all of us are, in a way, getting multicultural in our ears. All of us are listening to different kinds of music and the bottom line is most of us love melodies, most of us love grooves. So there is a kind of universality, and when you focus on it you can find it.

As a convert to Islam, do you view your career in a spiritual light? I believe that when good vibes come from people, like prayers and love, it changes your destiny and that’s what I always felt about my life. [I've had] a lot of goodwill from family and Sufi peers. Getting those two Oscars — I definitely feel that I have to thank all those people.

Some Islamic fundamentalists forbid music. What’s your view? I have personally discovered that love and music cleanse your mind and heal you and these are my explanations and reasons to follow music. I can’t answer the question of whether it’s right or wrong, but I know that whatever I am doing is being loved by people and I do get my prayers answered.

I recently heard the remix of “Jai Ho” featuring the Pussycat Dolls and was surprised that you consented to have that done to such a beautiful song. What motivated it?

I didn’t want [the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack] to die as a film soundtrack. I wanted to extend it to a younger audience, too. We made sure that we told [the Pussycat Dolls] that this was a song about destiny, about love and all that stuff. [It's] about victory, so don’t make it obscene. Make it lovable. And I think they did a very good job … It took almost eight different tries to get it right.

Where do you see yourself fitting into the modern scheme of music? I love to embrace new technology and new ideas. But I think melody plays a very important role in my sensibility in music. Melody and harmony — that never changes. All the classics are always classics.

What do you listen to on your MP3 player? What I listened to yesterday were the ghazal [a Sufi song form] of Mehdi Hassan and then I listened to Tchaikovsky, and then I listened to an Irish artist — I don’t know who it was. So it’s like three weird things. I was traveling from Bangalore to Chennai.

Is there any way you could beat your Oscar success? Some people have been nominated 38 times and not won. Some composers 10 times, 11 times. I have been really lucky to have been nominated [in three categories] in the same year and then got two of those. It’s really amazing. To beat this record musically? I would love to but [it's more important] to get the spirit back in writing music.

US Navy Battle-Ships

1464 billion dollars -- that's what nations around the world spent to secure themselves from their adversaries. The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute has compiled a list of the top 10 military spenders in 2008.

India, which is ranked 10 in the list, is being touted as the most important single country market for weapons in the near future. It spent $30 billion (about Rs 1,50,000 crore) on military purchases in 2008. According to SIPRI, based on current orders Russia remains India's most important supplier. However, Russian demands for increased payments for weapons on order and quality problems with delivered weapons have soured relations.
Unlike China, India has the option of using other suppliers, such as France, Israel or the UK. Recently, relations with the USA have improved and two large orders for high-tech US weapons were signed in 2008, it added.

1.  United States takes up the biggest share of the global military expenditure. It spent $607 billion on new weapons. No wonder it tops the list of the world's top 10 military spenders.

'The idea of the 'war on terror' has encouraged many countries to see their problems through a highly militarised lens, using this to justify high military spending,' Sam Perlo-Freeman, head of the Military Expenditure Project at the think tank said in a statement

'The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have cost $903 billion in additional military spending by the USA alone.'

2.  In 2008, China was, for the first time, the world's second highest military spender with a total expenditure of $84.9 billion.

China has been a major recipient of weapons since the early 1990s and has been the largest importer for several years. Most Chinese arms imports originate from Russia. However, Russian deliveries to China dropped significantly in 2007 and 2008.

China has used its access to Russian technology to develop indigenous weapons, in some cases using illegally copied Russian components.

3.  France comes third in the list narrowly overtaking the United Kingdom, which held the position in 2007. It spent $65.7 billion in 2008 on military expenses.

SIPRI military expenditure figures are based on information available in open sources, primarily supplied by governments. They represent a low estimate; the true level of military spending is certainly higher, due to omitted countries and items of spending.

An alternative would be to convert figures using purchasing power parity (PPP) exchange rates. If GDP-based PPP rates were used in the above table, Russia would move up to third place, India to fourth and Saudi Arabia to sixth, after the UK. While the USA would still be far ahead, its relative dominance would diminish.

4.  The United Kingdom is the world's fourth highest military spender with a total expenditure of $65.3 billion

According to SIPRI, the global financial crisis has yet to have an impact on major arms companies' revenues, profits and order backlogs, which generally continued to increase in 2008.

In fact, military expenditure comprised approximately 2.4 per cent of global gross domestic product (GDP) in 2008, it added.

5.  Russia is ranked fifth in the list with a total military expenditure of $58.6 billion.

SIPRI estimates put the number of operational nuclear warheads in the world in 2008 at 8,400. Of them, almost 2,000 were kept on high alert and capable of being launched within minutes, it said.

6.  Germany is ranked sixth in the list with a total military expenditure of $46.8 billion.

In Western and Central Europe spending remained fairly flat in 2008, although some recent and prospective NATO members increased military spending substantially, says the SIPRI yearbook

7.  Japan is the seventh highest military spender with a total military expenditure of $46.3 billion.

East Asia, Europe and the Middle East continued to be the largest recipient regions for 2004 2008, each accounting for about 20 per cent of all imports. China remained the single largest recipient for the period 2004-2008, followed by India, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea and Greece.

8.  Italy is the eighth highest military spender with a total military expenditure of $40.6 billion.

According to the data compiled by SIPRI, military spending in the Middle East fell slightly in 2008, although this is probably temporary, with many countries in the region planning major arms purchases. In contrast, there was a large rise in Iraq, whose 2008 military budget was 133 per cent higher in real terms than its 2007 spending.

9.  Saudi Arabia is placed ninth in the list with a total military expenditure of $38.2 billion.

The yearbook also reveals that in January 2009, eight states possessed a total of more than 23,300 nuclear weapons, including operational warheads, spares, those in both active and inactive storage, and intact warheads scheduled for dismantlement.

As of 2008, global stocks of highly enriched uranium totaled approximately 1379 tons (not including 297 tons to be blended down). Global military stocks of separated plutonium totaled approximately 255 tons and civilian stocks totaled 246 tons.

10.  India, which is ranked 10 in the list, is being touted as the most important single country market for weapons in the near future. It spent $30 billion on military purchases in 2008. According to SIPRI, based on current orders Russia remains India's most important supplier. However, Russian demands for increased payments for weapons on order and quality problems with delivered weapons have soured relations.

Unlike China, India has the option of using other suppliers, such as France, Israel or the UK. Recently, relations with the USA have improved and two large orders for high-tech US weapons were signed in 2008, it added.

botnet

Apart from being a serious problem for PCs, botnets are now targeting mobile phones. The security vendor Trend Micro predicted at the beginning of the year that 2009 would see the first 3G botnet; and has finally discovered what it claims to be the first botnet for mobile devices, which heralds a dramatic change in the nature of mobile threats.

According to Trend Micro's Research Lab the Symbian-based malware, labeled SYMBOS_YXES.B, could be downloaded from malicious mobile sites by unsuspecting users. This new malware targets the Symbian OS specifically.

A Symbian Information Source file collects phone and subscriber ID and network information on affected devices, and connects to a web site in order to send the information on. In addition, it can also send spammed SMS to the user's contacts acquired from the web site it connected to earlier, states Trend Micro Labs. In short, it appears to be a botnet for mobile phones.

Trend Micro advises firms to ensure that all corporate mobile devices are protected with a firewall to block communications with the back-end site, along with SMS spam protection, data encryption and URL filtering.

Microsoft office logo

The technical preview version of Microsoft Office 2010, (codenamed Office 14) the successor of Microsoft Office 2007, has been released by the software major. Most interestingly, Microsoft has also announced a free Web-based version of its Office productivity suite, known as Office Web Applications. The radical move by Microsoft is a direct challenge to its arch rival Google and its online office productivity suite, Google Apps.

Office Web will include free online versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote which will work in the three Web browsers (Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Apple Safari).

Giving a tough competition to Google Docs, Office Web Applications will enable multiple people to simultaneously work on the same document, whether it's in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint or OneNote. It will also allow users to create, edit, access and share Office documents directly in the browser.

The Office Web Applications will also feature user interfaces similar to their desktop counterparts. The new versions of Outlook, OneNote, Publisher and SharePoint Server now have ribbon-based interfaces, which can be customized.

Analysts say the new Office Web Applications seem to be far more powerful than Google's online applications and should offer much better compatibility with Microsoft Office files.

Office Web Applications can also be used with any mobile phone that has a compatible microbrowser. The company is also streamlining the number of Office editions from eight to five and enhancing each edition with additional applications and features.

"Office 2010 is the premier productivity solution across PCs, mobile phones and browsers," said Chris Capossela, senior vice president, Microsoft business division, Microsoft. "From broadcast and video editing in PowerPoint, new data visualization capabilities in Excel, and co-authoring in Word, we are delivering technology to help people work smarter and faster from virtually any location using any device."
Office 2010 and related products will be available in the first half of 2010.

United States President Barack Obama said that he is laying the foundation of an education system which would help America compete with China and India in the 21st century.

"We have already taken some steps that are building the foundation for a 21st century education system here in America, one that will allow us to compete with China and India and everybody else all around the world," Obama told a cheering crowd in Warren Michigan where he announced the American Graduation Initiative.

After entering the White House and even during his election campaign last year, Obama has been urging American parents to gear up and focus on studies of their kids as students from countries like China and India are marching ahead.

"At the start of my administration I set a goal for America: By 2020, this nation will once again have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world. We used to have that. We're going to have it again," Obama said amidst applause from the audience.

Announcing the American Graduation Initiative, which is aimed at reaching the goal of having the highest college graduation rate in the world, he said, "We are going to achieve this in the next 10 years."

"It will reform and strengthen community colleges like this one from coast to coast so they get the resources that students and schools need and the results workers and businesses demand. Through this plan, we seek to help an additional five million Americans earn degrees and certificates in the next decade," Obama said.

Under the new initiative the emphasis would be on community colleges, which train youths with necessary skills that would fetch them jobs.

"Many young people are saving money by spending two years at community college before heading to a four-year college. And more workers who have lost their jobs or fear losing a job are seeking an edge at schools like this one," he said.

Safer Monsoon Driving

Last time, we looked at some handy tips to keep your car in top shape for the monsoons. This week, here's the lowdown on how to drive better and safer in the rains.

1. Keep safe distance

Braking distances increase significantly on a wet road. To account for this change in driving conditions, ensure that you keep a safe distance from the car ahead of you. In heavy traffic conditions, you will rarely go above 20-25 km/hr - in spite of that, do keep a larger gap between the car ahead of you and yourself, than you would have in the dry. On the highways, be especially careful - follow at least the 3-second rule (3-second gap between the car ahead of you and yourself), and increase it according to road and visibility conditions.

2. Keep it smooth

In the wet, it is very important to be smooth with the car's controls. Don't accelerate or brake suddenly. Don't offer any abrupt steering inputs. Ensure that you make a conscious effort to accelerate smoothly and gradually, begin braking early and anticipate turns/moves in advance.

Sudden inputs can cause your car to lose traction in tricky conditions, and spin -- a situation that is dangerous to you as well as other road users.

3. Light up

You have already ensured that all your lights are working perfectly fine. This is the time to light up and make yourself visible on the road. If visibility starts to reduce rapidly, switch on your headlights.

In addition to improving visibility for you, the headlights will ensure that oncoming traffic sees you well in advance. Drive on low beam as high beam will only reflect back and make life more difficult for you (especially in case of foggy conditions). In case traffic on the highway is moving slowly due to heavy rains, switch on your hazard lights to warn cars following you.

4. Wait and watch

If it begins to rain very heavily while you are on the road, turn on all your lights, switch on the hazard lamps and park by the side of the road. Wait till the rain subsides, and visibility improves before you get going again.

If it's raining harder than your wipers can manage to clear out, you won't be able to see much through the windscreen -- an easy enough way to know that you must stop.

5. Still waters run deep

Avoid puddles and parts of the road where there is accumulated water. You never know what lies beneath. It could be an open manhole, or a killer pothole -- both of which will cause your car to take a pretty big hit.

Ever so often, especially in our cities, you will come across a situation where it is absolutely not possible to avoid driving through standing/flowing water. In that case, let someone else go before you, and carefully follow in their tracks. Be sure to keep the engine revved in case the water level is higher than your car's exhaust pipe.

6. Clear the fog

Fog on the inside can be a terrible pain to counter.  If your car has an AC, change the temperature setting to 'warm', direct the airflow towards the windscreen and change the ventilation setting to allow fresh air into the car. If your car has a defogger, switch it on -- a defogger passes current through thin strips installed on the glass and defogs it.

If your car does not have an AC, open the windows very slightly, and keep a soft cloth handy to keep cleaning the windscreen. Be careful though, as you don't want anything distracting your driving.

Driving on a wet road demands concentration in huge amounts. It is demanding, and can get tiring pretty quickly. Follow these simple tips, and make your drive enjoyable and safe.

Are you the person in the family with the sole responsibility of maintaining the household finances?

Is your spouse completely oblivious of what's happening?

God forbid, but what if for some reason you can no longer manage the budget? Or what if you're just tired of managing everything yourself, and want your partner to become more involved in your household's finances? How do you teach her everything you know?

woman-housework-high-heels

This is the time to sit down and stress on the importance of your partner needing to be aware of all important financial information. This may not be the most entertaining of activities, but it is the key to taking the best possible care of one of the most important people in your life.

1. Make a list of everything and where they are located

While you may be an open book for each other, don't assume your other half possesses the intuition to know where you keep sensitive information.

While you may think your filing system is the most organized one that one can ever come across, and that your financial records are in a pretty obvious location, your partner may not think so.

So what is the first thing you should do? Present your partner with a list of logins, passwords of all of your accounts making it easy to see everything that needs to be addressed. Keep it of course in a safe and secure location.

2. Discuss transparency regarding investment info, emergency funds and bank accounts

Your partner may be under the false impression that not knowing the details of your family finances will reduce stress.

That's not the case. Explain to him/her that sharing knowledge and responsibility for your financial life reduces stress as it makes you ready for any situation that may arise when one is unable to operate.

In times of emergency like a long absence or medical emergency or death - this info then becomes the most important thing.

3. Awareness of all financial dealings is a must

Your partner should know all your financial dealings so that there are no rude surprises. So sit down and review your financial situation together - cash in the bank, investments, equity in your home, mortgages, credit card debt, and any other liabilities you may have. Review your budget together.

Being aware of all financial dealings has a couple of benefits. First, you make better decisions when you collaborate.

Second, you share responsibility for the outcomes -- good and bad -- which means that he/she is never in the dark about where you stand. And this eliminates a lot of the tension that inevitably results when one party knows a lot less than the other.

4. Have your partner watch you handle the finances

Educate your partner on how to handle finances. Let him or her watch and learn.

Explaining things is helpful, and written instructions/checklists/spreadsheets are even better, but nothing beats sitting down with your partner and talking through actually managing the finances.

Let your partner observe the process while you explain it, and then have him or her practice it with your help and guidance.

5. Gradually give your partner some financial responsibility

If your partner hasn't handled the money at all, start off with a small, manageable task - preferably one with low stakes. As he or she becomes more adept, give additional tasks to manage.

Eventually, have your partner handle all the finances for one month (with your supervision, of course). Then, try switching off months, with your partner handling the finances every other month until you both feel completely comfortable.

6. Discuss contingency plans

Make sure your partner knows what you would do in an emergency or unplanned financial event. Don't keep it conceptual - discuss actual, concrete strategies to handle unplanned events.

If there is a sudden loss of income, which bills would need to be prioritized, and which expenses could be reduced or dropped altogether? What are your savings priorities? If there is an accident which account do you access before you get benefits from your insurance? Is there any charity to which you would donate a significant sum?

On a lighter note, if you win a lottery (the ticket of which you have just bought with his/ her consent) which debts do you clear?

7. Maintain a household budget

You may not be the type who needs to write everything down to successfully manage your money, but a budget is an excellent way to give your partner a big-picture idea of all the money in play - the income, the debts, the recurring expenses, the investments and so on.

It can also help your partner pick up where you left off in managing the household's finances if you die or become incapacitated.

So, start encouraging him/her to start making a budget plan. Soon you will find that both of you are enjoying it and life is becoming a real partnership.

From the early days of the web it has been default behavior for forms to "mask" passwords by displaying asterisks or something similar instead of the actual characters. The obvious point of this is to protect your password from the eyes of passers-by.

Now famed usability expert Jakob Nielsen is calling into question the value of this practice and arguing that the usability impact of it is too great. Nielsen says forms should display passwords in clear text, at least usually and by default. Nielsen doesn't like Reset buttons either.

passwords

There has been plenty of negative reaction to this call, generally hedged with respect to Nielsen's overall body of work: Jason Montgomery analyzed Nielsen in great detail, pointing out, for example, where he's merely changing the subject rather than making a valid criticism of password masking. Rik Ferguson points out unsubstantiated assertions in the case. Julio Canto simply says "Please do NOT stop password masking".

Nielsen can at least count Bruce Schneier on his side. Schneier also downplays the danger of "shoulder surfing" and argues that the usability impact is severe.

I have to say I'm unimpressed with Nielsen's (and Schneier's) arguments. Whenever I come to the rare form that doesn't mask I'm nervous about it, even if I'm home alone.
Nielson argues that a talented and determined password thief could just watch your fingers as you type. This is true some times, but seems like a really weak argument to me. Why make an attack that's difficult much easier to do? And the keystrokes are exposed only for as long as you're typing. The password is exposed until the screen is cleared. One of the commentators also noted that malware that captures screens is defeated by password masking.

I understand the usability complaints, but almost all security features come at some cost, often in usability. It's a trade-off. Nielsen hasn't made a good case that the trade-offs fall in favor of clear-text password display.

The Southern Ocean has lost its appetite for carbon dioxide, and now it appears that the ozone hole could be to blame.

In theory, oceans should absorb more CO2 as levels of the gas in the atmosphere rise. Measurements show that this is happening in most ocean regions, but strangely not in the Southern Ocean, where carbon absorption has flattened off. Climate models fail to reproduce this puzzling pattern.

The Southern Ocean is a major carbon sink, guzzling around 15 per cent of CO2 emissions. However, between 1987 and 2004, carbon uptake in the region was reduced by nearly 2.5 billion tonnes – equivalent to the amount of carbon that all the world's oceans absorb in one year.

Antartic Ozone Hole deepens

Andrew Lenton, from the University of Pierre and Marie Curie in Paris, France, and his colleagues created a coupled ocean and atmosphere climate model, to investigate carbon absorption in oceans. Crucially, they included changes in the concentration of stratospheric ozone since 1975.

By running their model with and without the ozone depletion since 1975, Lenton and his colleagues were able to show that the ozone hole is responsible for the Southern Ocean's carbon saturation.

The effect could be down to the way decreasing stratospheric ozone and rising greenhouse gases are altering the radiation balance of the Earth's atmosphere. This has been predicted to alter and strengthen the westerly winds that blow over the Southern Ocean.

"We expected this transition to a windier regime, but it has occurred much earlier than we thought, seemingly because of the ozone hole," says Lenton.

Stronger surface winds enhance circulation of ocean waters, encouraging carbon-rich waters to rise from the deep, limiting the capability of surface water to absorb carbon from the atmosphere. Furthermore, the higher carbon levels in surface waters make them more acidic – bad news for many forms of ocean life, such as coral and squid.

"This result illustrates how complex the chain of cause and effect can be in the Earth system. No one would ever have predicted from first principles that increasing CFCs would have the effect of decreasing uptake of ocean carbon dioxide," says Andrew Watson, from the University of East Anglia, UK.

Experts say that just about every man who can masturbate does -- and why not? You don't need an expert to tell you that solo sex feels good, relieves stress, and is a terrific sleep aid. But here are five things you may not know about masturbation:

1. There's no such thing as "abnormal" masturbation.

Men often wonder if there's something abnormal about the way they masturbate. But experts are loath to offer specific definitions of "normal" and "abnormal," pointing out that men show great variations in both frequency and technique. "We humans are too diverse to establish a norm. Every man masturbates in his own way, whether he "uses his hands, rubs against something, uses a sex toy or household object, wears special clothing, fantasizes, looks at a book or magazine, tries different positions, or looks in a mirror."

2. Masturbation is very safe -- but not entirely safe.

Unlike sex with a partner, masturbation can't give you a sexually transmitted disease. Nor will it subject you to the muscle strains, pokes in the eye, and awkward moments that can come with partner sex. But masturbation safety isn't guaranteed. "Masturbation is just about the safest sex there is,". "But the laws of physics and biology don't stop operating just because someone is masturbating."

Frequent or overly vigorous masturbation can irritate the skin of the penis, as the average guy knows all too well. Less well known is that habitually masturbating face down -- for example, by thrusting against a sheet, pillow, or even a carpeted floor -- can injure the urethra in such a way that urine exits the penis not in a stream but in a hard-to-control spray.

In certain extremely rare instances, masturbation and partner sex alike can cause penile fracture. This painful condition -- actually a tear in the tunica albuginea, the whitish tissue surrounding the penis's spongy layers -- occurs when an erect penis strikes a hard object or is forced downward. A medical emergency, it often necessitates surgery.

3. Solo sex can supercharge your sex life -- or scuttle it.

For various reasons, solo sex can be a real boon to sex with a partner. It helps teach men about their own sexual response -- what feels good to them and what doesn't -- so they will be better able to explain to their partners just how they like to be touched. It helps men learn to recognize the "moment of inevitability" just before orgasm and helps teach them how to avoid premature ejaculation. Perhaps most significant, it's a great coping mechanism for any man whose partner is temporarily unavailable for sex -- because of absence or illness -- or has a sex drive that doesn't quite match his own (something sex therapists call a disparity in frequency preference).

Of course, some men become so obsessed with solo sex that they begin to lose interest in having sex with their partner. The resulting hurt feelings and alienation a partner feels can make it hard to sustain the relationship. But experts are quick to point out that masturbation is perfectly OK even for men in a committed relationship. We cannot assume that just because a man masturbates that there is a problem with his primary relationship.

4. Certain forms of masturbation can lead to sexual dysfunction.

Experts warn that men who frequently stimulate themselves in ways that don't simulate sex with a partner -- for example, stroking very rapidly or with great pressure or friction -- can develop retarded ejaculation. That's a type of sexual dysfunction in which it is difficult or even impossible to climax during partnered sex. Any man experiencing any sexual dysfunction should ask himself if he's masturbating in ways that produce sensations that differ from those he gets from his partner's hand, mouth, or vagina,". Then he should consider what he could say to her to make the stimulation more similar -- and how he could change the way he masturbates to make it feel more similar to what his partner does."

5. Masturbation may affect the risk for prostate cancer.

The relationship between masturbation and prostate cancer is a bit hazy.

A 2003 Australian study published in BJU International linked frequent ejaculation early in life with reduced risk for prostate cancer later on. But in a 2004 study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association, a researcher reported that "ejaculation frequency is not related to increased risk of prostate cancer." In both these studies, ejaculation frequency included sexual intercourse and masturbation.

In a study published this past January in BJU International, researchers found that frequent masturbation in young men raised the risk for prostate cancer but that frequent masturbation in older men lowered the risk. Sexual intercourse did not affect prostate cancer risk.

The researchers theorize that it may not be the masturbation itself which is increasing risk of prostate cancer in men who masturbate frequently in their 20s and 30s. Men who masturbate more may do so because they have high levels of male sex hormones -- and young men genetically predisposed to have hormone-sensitive prostate cancer will be at higher risk if they have more male hormones. In men over age 50, the researchers theorize, frequent masturbation helps drain the prostate of fluids that may contain cancer-causing substances.

Money stacks - for Wealth Protection Tips

Rule 1: Be systematic, unemotional and diversified

This is the very first rule we touch on right from the beginning. There's a popular bumper sticker that says, "I'm spending my grandkids' inheritance."

That whole idea just frustrates me. In some ways, our society's personality is such that if we can spend our money before we die, we've lived a great life. But you can't do that.

Rule 2: Never spend principal

That's the second rule. Inflation has gone above 10 per cent in the US economy five times, and I'd bet you it will happen again.

Rule 3: Never borrow money to buy a depreciating asset

Almost everybody does this at some point. But as soon as possible, and definitely by retirement, you have to get back to a cash basis.

How many people know what a $30,000 car bought on credit costs them at age 25? In retirement dollars, at age 65 and assuming a hypothetical 10 per cent return, that financed car could cost as much as $11,314 a month in potential income. Forever!

So, do you or your children understand what an "investment" in a car really costs you? Yes, I know we all buy cars. But try to imagine what would happen if I got every 25-year-old to forgo just one car purchase and invest that same amount of money in their long-term retirement goals. What a huge difference that could make to their choices at retirement!

Rule 4: Never save money in a spending account

Keep separate bank accounts for saving and spending. You have to save in savings accounts. If you truly want those savings to grow, use an account that helps you leave the money at work, rather than a "slush fund" that's easy to dip into.

People tell me they are saving $545 a month in an account. Yet when I ask them how much they have accumulated after seven years of doing this, their answer is often $1,123 because they spend out of that same account.

It is not a save-to-save account -- it's a save-to-spend account! If you know you're not naturally a disciplined saver, make it harder to get at the money. You'll be doing yourself a favor in the long run.

Rule 5: Use half, save half

Every time you pay off a debt, get a pay raise, get a bonus, or have any excess cash, have fun with half the money, and put the other half toward your long-term goals.

This is one of the best rules, especially for younger people. By following this rule consistently, in ten years, most people are amazed at how much they can save.

Whether you save or not has nothing to do with how much money you make. Either you save or you don't. It's a habit. Make a habit of investing half of any windfall, big or small, right off the top.

Rule 6: Always use matching money

For example, your employer's 401(k) matching program (in India, the employer's matching Providend Fund Contribution, for example).

Do whatever you must to take advantage of matched contributions in a retirement plan. You can't afford not to take the free money.

Hypothetically speaking, if you invest $100 take-home pay in a taxable investment (25 per cent tax on growth) at an assumed 10 per cent return, you would potentially have $135,586 in 30 years (sales charges and fees not included).

If you put the same $100 into your 401(k) that is 100 per cent matched, now you have $150 a month saved because of the tax savings.

Meanwhile your boss adds $150 because of the match -- and it grows tax-deferred, too! Using the same hypothetical return scenario, we have $683,797 to live on -- five times as much wealth with the same work.

Sometimes being smart with our money is a phenomenal advantage. This is a classic example of where investor behavior, not investment performance, makes a huge difference in your long-term wealth potential. You can hate your boss, or plan to quit, but you must take advantage of the matched money.

Rule 7: Do not spend more than you make

This should seem painfully obvious, but people often have no idea how much they're really spending and what relationship that has to how much they make.

In making a budget people often cannot account for 30 per cent of the money they earn and where it goes.

If you are just a little more vigilant, you can significantly enhance your long-term ability to reach your goals.

A budget doesn't happen by accident; it takes practice and is an ever-changing tool in our financial planning. Practice makes perfect. Although "perfect" is never the ideal word for a budget, it does have more meaning and usefulness the longer we practice its use.

Rule 8: Never leave undivided real property to joint beneficiaries

Lots of things are more important than money. Family is probably at the top of the list. If you want a vicious family feud on your hands, breaking this rule would be a great place to start.

Imagine a farm that gets left to four sons: One has farmed it for 20 years; one is an environmentalist and wants it to be a park; one is broke and needs money; and one could not care less about it. Who will get wealthy from this plan? The attorneys. And the kids and grandkids will probably hate each other forever.

Remember that 'equal', 'equitable', and 'fair' are three different words with three totally different meanings.

Rule 9: Never name co-trustees or co-executors of your estate

This one goes right along with the undivided property rule above. Next to poor planning, litigation can be the biggest financial drain on an estate.

Minimize the number of trusted decision-makers, and you'll reduce your chances for litigation. What's more, the entire process will be easier and more efficient with one decision-maker.

Rule 10: Above all --

--Be happy with what you have, and it will lead to both unbelievable financial success and personal (not mere financial) wealth!

The hacker attacks on websites in South Korea - which spilled over to selected US Government sites last week - were almost certainly orchestrated by hackers sympathetic to North Korea, but the attacks could have been organized by anyone with a modest budget, says data security firm Imperva.

"It doesn't make sense that this attack came exclusively from North Korea. First, the attack was using widespread code executed by zombie computers all over the world. Second, this attack is relatively inexpensive to execute — no more than $50,000 — making it doable not just by any Government, but also by any Tony Soprano. That's the really scary part," according to Amichai Shulman, co-founder and CTO, Imperva.

Shulman added, while the attacks on the US Government and South Korea were almost certainly the result of hackers sympathetic to the cause of North Korea, the Government in the North should not be held exclusively responsible.

Further, in the case of US Government, he explained, the impact of the attacks could have been easily mitigated. US Government has placed too much reliance on multiple Internet service providers. "The US Government can learn a lesson from Israel who set up a central connection authority, the Tehila, for all government agencies that provide traffic management services as well as security, redundancy and disaster recovery. In this case, a central authority would have had an easier time blocking an attack of this nature."

"The attacks," he went on to say, "show that security experts must never take their eye off of 'old school' threats as the industry moves to protect itself from new and more sophisticated attacks. As organizations shift their security focus to protect against data-centric attacks, they should never forget about the importance of perimeter defenses."

"Had the right defenses been in place in the first place, the hacker attacks would only have caused a minor slowdown in Internet operations and the hackers would have been unsuccessful in their quest," he added.

Google said Wednesday that the company is actively working with hardware partners to develop netbooks based on its newly-announced Google Chrome OS. The question is, who? Google revealed the answer late on Wednesday.

Earlier, representatives at Acer, Asus, Dell, and Hewlett-Packard all declined to confirm any plans to develop netbooks based on the Chrome OS. Meanwhile, sources at and close to those companies said that Google had yet to establish the sort of close working relationships that Microsoft had put in place to enable those OEMs to ship Windows-based machines.

Google Chrome OS

However, Google disclosed a list of its partners in a second blog post: Acer, Adobe, Asus, Freescale, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, Qualcomm, and Texas Instruments. At this point, little is known about the Chrome OS itself, as well as its potential market. Google announced the Chrome OS on last night; a day later, numerous questions remained about the OS itself and Google's plans for it.

"Google Chrome OS will run on both x86 as well as ARM chips and we are working with multiple OEMs to bring a number of netbooks to market next year," Google vice president Sundar Pichai and Linus Upson wrote in a blog post.

If there is a working relationship between Google and major hardware OEMs, however, it's either very preliminary or deep inside the company.

Dell, for example, declined to comment directly. "Dell constantly assesses new technologies as part of managing our product development process and for consideration in future products," a Dell spokeswoman said.

HP, for its part, said it "was studying Chrome". "Regarding Chrome, we want to assess the capability it may have for the computer and communications industries, and so we are studying it," a company spokeswoman said in an email. "HP is constantly evaluating ways to help solve customer challenges. With respect to if, how or when HP might introduce any Chrome-enabled platforms, we maintain a practice of declining to comment on products that may or may not be under way."

To date, Google has left virtually all information surrounding the Chrome OS in the company's blog post. Put simply, the Chrome OS is described as "Google Chrome running within a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel."

Google representatives could not be reached for comment at press time. Microsoft representatives could also not be reached for comment.

Pichai and Upson claimed that both the Android operating system, as well as the Chrome OS, share similarities but are not the same thing. The Android operating system has appeared in two phones from T-Mobile within the United States, both manufactured by HTC. The most recent offering, the MyTouch 3G, launched in the United States on Wednesday.

But Google has also slowly rolled out the Android platform, leaving some to wonder earlier this year whether the OS has already failed.

"Google Chrome OS is a new project, separate from Android. Android was designed from the beginning to work across a variety of devices from phones to set-top boxes to netbooks," Pichai and Upson wrote. "Google Chrome OS is being created for people who spend most of their time on the web, and is being designed to power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-size desktop systems. While there are areas where Google Chrome OS and Android overlap, we believe choice will drive innovation for the benefit of everyone, including Google."

Google Chrome OS will be open-sourced, Pichai and Upson added.

Dell already ships one of its Mini netbook line, the Mini 10v, using Ubuntu, a Linux distribution maintained by Canonical. HP has done the same with a customized Ubuntu distribution on its Mini 1000 Mi netbook. And the original Eee PC launched with Xandros, a Linux distribution which was customized by Asus to make it as simple as possible to use, according to Josh Norem, a technical marketing executive at Asus's North American business.

But in a February report, market researcher NPD found that over 96 percent of netbooks sold within the U.S. contain Windows, evidence that the majority of netbook buyers preferred a more familiar environment. Asus's Norem confirmed that the majority of Asus netbook buyers also favored Microsoft. "We found many more people preferred Windows XP," he said.

"People still feel uncomfortable and initimidated in a different environment, as streamlined as it is," Norem added.

Establishing those working relationships between hardware manufacturers and Google isn't impossible; for example, a spokeswoman for Dell noted that the company pre-installed Google desktop search across its client portfolio for a couple of years, and Dell also has an OEM relationship where the company offers a Google Search appliance.

However, Google has yet to put in place anything like the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC), an annual confab where hardware vendors and Microsoft employees hash out the future of computing. The question, one source said, was whether Google shared the same ambitions, and whether the Linux platform underlying the Chrome OS would require the same depth of technical interaction Microsoft's Windows operating system requires.

THE Red Planet, Mars, could have a water table hidden underground, despite satellite data suggesting otherwise.

Recently, the small amount of water detected on the planet is locked in the polar ice caps, but recently discovered geological features suggest liquid water once flowed on its surface. This could now be hiding beneath the rocky crust.

The European Space Agency's Mars Express satellite has used ground-penetrating radar in some areas to look for a water table but found no evidence for one, despite research that concluded any water would be found within 9 kilometres of the surface - well within the reach of the probe's instruments.

Water on Mars planet

Planetary scientist Bill Farrell of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and colleagues will argue in Geophysical Research Letters that we shouldn't give up the search just yet, however. The satellite's radar signal should bounce back from shiny surfaces like water. But the team calculates that if the layer of rock and icy soil above the water table is particularly conductive, it could be absorbing enough energy from the radar to obscure a telltale signal.

Farrell says the work will be useful for missions to other icy bodies too: "We don't want future geologists to look at their radar data and say no reflectance means no aquifer."

Microsoft is not successful in every software market they enter. Anti-malware is a market they have never seriously competed in and last November they withdrew, for a second time, from the consumer AV space.

But the more important part of that withdrawal announcement was that they would return, this time with a free product, at the time code-named Morro. The official name for that product is Microsoft Security Essentials and the public beta test version of it will be available for download from Microsoft starting June 23 at about 9am PDT from http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials. Generally availability is scheduled for later this calendar year.

microsoft-security-essentials

There was a time when a move like this would have brought protesters out and lawyers filing briefs in Federal court, but times have changed. True, since the Security Essentials announcement it is known from other anti-malware vendors, mostly arguing that Microsoft's offering is second- or third-rate and not innovative, and this may be true. I think it may actually be intentional

Microsoft's motivations for releasing a free anti-malware product are different from AVG's or Panda's or Avira's. Those companies really want a foot in the door to get you to upgrade and also to use their free product for visibility. Microsoft isn't trying to sell anything here except Windows. Their free anti-malware is meant to protect the Windows "ecosystem," to reduce the number of unprotected systems out there. The point is for people not to have an excuse not to be protected.

Already they have no such excuse. There are numerous free products and let's do them the favor of assuming they are at least as good at their jobs as Microsoft's. And yet lots of people who need protection run without it. Free AV from a company with the visibility of Microsoft could have a positive impact on malware protection at the macro level. Time will tell, but I have to figure this is a good thing for us all.

Most of the spam seen in the UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham) Spam Data Mine has "ties to China," according to a blog from one of the participants there. It has some interesting analysis and numbers.

On a recent day they received 37,825 URLs in spam, containing 687 domain names, of which 207 ended in ".cn". Over a recent 48 day period there were 12,246 domains, 8,045 of which were .cn domains and 6,813 of which were actually hosted in China. And for the year so far, 70% of all domains in spam are in .cn, and 70% are also hosted in China, not necessarily the same 70%.

SPAM

Don't project the number of spam messages on to these numbers. According to Gary Warner, the blogger here, some of the non-.cn domains are disproportionately prolific in sending messages. Warner is the Director of Research in Computer Forensics at UAB.

Warner says that the real problem is that there are too many registrars and hosting services in China who do not respond reasonably to abuse complaints. You hear this a lot from security people, If Internet infrastructure companies responded well to abuse complaints there would be a lot less abuse out there. There really are people complaining. He also complains about the lack of interest from law enforcement in China. He thinks the problem is not understood at a senior enough level and that it would not be tolerated if it were.

Beach photography doesn’t have to be simply pointing your camera at some water and sand and pushing a button. There are also some logistical things to worry about, such as lighting and timing. Here are five tips to take to the beach with you.

1. Use UV Filters: For DSLR users, Digital Photography School recommends bringing UV filters for your lens. Not only do they protect your lens as light at the beach can be extremely bright when reflecting off the water, but they filter out atmospheric haze, making for a clearer, more natural picture.

beach101801

2. Use action/sports modes: Sharpness and timing are critical when it comes to nature shots, so best to have a fast shutter speed ready to go. If you’re interested in getting shots of crashing waves, best to set your camera to one of these modes as Shutterbug notes that these presets will trigger a fast shutter speed to freeze the spray. Also, its best to take these photos from a distance with a telephoto lens to protect your camera, unless you have a waterproof cover for it.

3. Framing: Framing can really make or break a picture sometimes. Alternative ways of thinking about framing, really thinking outside the 4 x 6 box, can produce some amazing photos. Don’t just go for taking a picture with the view of looking down the beach. Focus on interesting characters, take close-ups of objects like food or sporting equipment, or simply tilt your camera in a different way than usual. Photographing a day at the beach can really be about telling a story, and at the beach, there are so many different stories.

4. Mind time of day: I’m a big fan of late afternoon, sunset and twilight pictures. Unless you have a tripod, nighttime beach photos aren’t really worth the effort. I’m also much opposed to mid-day natural light, especially between Noon and 3 PM at most beaches, unless there are some spectacular cloud formations among a blue sky. There is more richness of color and availability of shadows to use later in the day.

5. Use filters when editing: Photo-editing software like Photoshop and iPhoto have a plethora of color and focus filters to take advantage of when it comes time to look through your photos. When you’re shooting digitally, this is really the best time to use those Black and White and Sepia filters as you can see up close what looks good, and you can keep the original copy of the photo untouched, in case you want to do something with it afterward. Black and white always looks classy, and it provides a quick fix for those photos that might have come out overexposed or were taken on an overcast day but you still want to keep. In iPhoto, specifically, the Antique filter provides an alternative mood to beach photography, as seen in the photo above.

Google’s coolest new product, called Google Voice, has just added a new feature that makes the service a lot less scary to jump into. If you haven’t heard about this service yet, it’s a solution that takes all your different phone numbers (home, work, cell, etc) and merges them into a single “Google Number”.

You can choose from a wide variety of area codes in the United States — which is great, but what happens if you move, or unknowingly picked 867-5309 as your phone number? Now Google Voice lets you change your Google Number for $10 bucks. When you change your number, your old one continues to work for three months — giving you time to tell people to call you on your new number.

Google has announced the launch of Google SMS in Africa, where cell phones are prevalent but Internet penetration is low. Google SMS is a suite of mobile applications which will allow people to access information, via SMS, on a diverse number of topics including health and agriculture tips, news, local weather, sports and more.

Most mobile devices in Africa only have voice and SMS capabilities, and so we are focusing our technological efforts in that continent on SMS.

google-homepage

Another service Google SMS Tips enables a mobile phone user to have a Web search-like experience. You enter a free form text query, and Google's algorithms restructure the query to identify keywords, search a database to identify relevant answers and return the most relevant answer.

The Internet search and advertising giant expects to improve search quality and the breadth — and depth — of content on Google SMS, especially on Tips and Trader. Google SMS is by no means a finished product, but that's what's both exciting and challenging about this Endeavour, the company says.

Google would step up efforts to stop pornography reaching users in China after a mainland watchdog found the search engine turned up a large number of links to obscene and vulgar sites. It said that it had renewed efforts to keep the Internet in China clean after noticing criticism posted Thursday to the website of the mainland watchdog, the China Internet Illegal Information Reporting Center, as reported by The Economic Times.

Google Inc. said on Friday that it would step up efforts to stop pornography reaching users in China after a mainland watchdog found the search engine turned up
a large number of links to obscene and vulgar sites.

ChildPornography

"We have been continually working to deal with pornographic content, and material that is harmful to children, on the Web in China," a statement from the company said.

It added that it had renewed efforts to keep the Internet in China clean after noticing criticism posted Thursday to the Web site of the mainland watchdog, the China Internet Illegal Information Reporting Center.

The watchdog said that despite official warnings, Google was still failing to "filter pornographic contents from its search engine results according to China's relevant laws and regulations." It said tests found that the search engine provided links to a large number of lewd and vulgar pictures, videos and articles, though it gave no specific examples.

China, which has the world's largest population of Internet users at more than 298 million, also has one of the world's tightest controls over the Internet. The government bans online pornography and this year launched a nationwide crackdown that led to the closing of more than 1,900 Web sites.

Google, headquartered in Mountain View, California, has struggled to expand in China, where it says it has about 30 per cent of the search market. China's homegrown Baidu search engine remains the most popular, with about 60 per cent of the market.

You know how many birthday candles are on your cake, but a new blood test may be able to tell whether you're aging faster, or slower, than you think.

That blood test is described in a new study, published in Aging Cell. It measures a protein called p16 that rises with age, and rises particularly fast if you smoke and don't exercise.

Researcher Norman Sharpless, MD, an associate professor of medicine and genetics at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, N.C., says other scientists identified the p16 gene years ago as a gene that helps prevent cancer. Later research showed that the p16 gene becomes more active as mammals age.

Alcohol has long been known to play a role in suicides, but there have been little data regarding which victims use it and how often. Now the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that in a large sample of suicide victims whose blood alcohol levels were measured post mortem, one in four had been legally drunk, with a blood alcohol content at or above the standard of 0.08, or 8 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood.

The study’s findings were limited because it examined data from only 17 states and because blood alcohol measurements were available for only 70 percent of those who committed suicide in those states. Still, about one-third of those tested had some level of alcohol in their bloodstream at death, the researchers found.

alcohol-drug-dependence

Alcohol is a component of suicidal behavior. It leads to dis-inhibition, and it can enhance feelings of hopelessness and depression. Alcohol impairs judgment and can lead to much more impulsive behavior. Any suicide prevention efforts must take that into account and address alcohol and substance abuse as well.

The study was among the first to analyze the role alcohol plays in suicide among different racial and ethnic groups. It found that American Indians and Alaska Natives were most likely to have been drunk when they committed suicide, with 37 percent legally intoxicated at the time of death. Among Hispanics, 29 percent were legally intoxicated when they took their lives.

The most important finding is that alcohol was linked to suicide across all the groups.

Younger adults and men were more likely than women or older people to have been drunk, the study found. Some 28 percent of adults ages 20 to 49 were intoxicated when they committed suicide, and 25 percent of men were intoxicated, compared to 18 percent of women.

The analysis was done by the agency’s division of violence prevention. Researchers examined data on 19,255 suicides from 17 states that contributed data to the National Violent Death Reporting System during 2005 and 2006.

The younger the individual, no matter what ethnic group, the more impulsive the suicide is, and the more impulsive the suicide is, the more likely alcohol is a major factor or trigger.

The typical scenario is that a young adult who is already troubled suffers a setback, such as a job loss or the breakup of a relationship, and starts binge drinking. It’s unclear if they get drunk in order to commit suicide, or that when they’re drunk they are more likely to do it. “Intoxication may be turned to as a solution but might ultimately trigger the ultimate solution for them — that is, killing themselves.”

Antioxidants play an important role in semen quality, according to new research from Spain.

The study found that "men with good semen quality ate more vegetables and fruit (more vitamins, folic acid and fiber and less protein and fats) than those men with low seminal quality”. Antioxidants, found mainly in fruits and vegetables, lower the level of oxidative stress that can affect semen quality, the researchers explained, and also improve sperm concentration and mobility.

sperm_parts

The study included 61 men -- 30 with reproductive problems and 31 who did not have such issues. It appears online in the journal Fertility and Sterility.

An earlier study by the same team "showed that men who eat large amounts of meat and full-fat dairy products have lower seminal quality than those who eat more fruit, vegetables and reduced-fat dairy products,".

But the new study "found that people who consume more fruits and vegetables are ingesting more antioxidants, and this is the important point,". "A healthy diet is not only a good way of avoiding illness but could also have an impact on improving seminal quality."

"What we still do not understand is the difference between taking these vitamins naturally and in the form of supplements," the researcher added. "In the studies we are going to carry out in the United States (where the consumption of vitamins in tablet form is very common), we will be looking at the role of supplements."

Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh's article was published in the compendium brought out by the G-8 nations on the eve of their summit in Italy.

As we near the end of the first decade of the 21st century, the challenges of global governance in an increasingly inter-connected and multi-polar world are truly formidable. Our institutions of global governance, centered on what may be called the UN system, were designed for the most part at the end of the Second World War and reflected the politico-economic realities of that age. The world was then dominantly bipolar, in the political and military sense, international trade and international capital flows were low, the developing countries were not economically important, indeed most of them were not even independent.

There has been a sea-change since then. Bipolarity has given way to multi-polarity, the developing countries are not only sovereign states but some group of developing countries have gained in relative economic importance and this trend will only gain momentum. The world has also become much more interconnected through the expansion of trade in goods and services and expansion of financial flows generated by capital account liberalization. Interconnection has in turn greatly increased problems of contagion and vulnerability especially through financial linkages.

Who needs antihistamines if you can eat your sneezes and itchy eyes away? Rice that could protect people against allergies such as hay fever has moved a stage closer to clinical trials, following a successful safety assessment in monkeys.

The GM rice is designed to block symptoms of runny noses and sneezing in people allergic to Japanese cedar pollen, who account for 20 per cent of the Japanese population. It is genetically modified to contain the seven proteins within cedar pollen that provoke the most serious allergic reactions in people.

Genetically Modified_rice

Once in the intestine, the proteins damp down allergic responses through so-called "oral tolerance". This is a process, controlled by lymph nodes, by which the immune system "learns" not to overreact to harmless foreign material such as food.

To stop the proteins being digested before they can have their effect, the rice was engineered to produce them in the endoplasmic reticulum, a part of rice plant cells that passes undigested through the stomach.

In 2005, Takaiwa demonstrated in mice that the strategy works. He used a different type of rice designed to make a different set of cedar pollen proteins that cause a similar allergy in mice.

The latest version fed to the monkeys is now ready to test in humans, he says. Because monkeys, too, react to different proteins, the latest assessment was simply to look at safety. Only when he gives the rice to people will Takaiwa find out if it works or not.

Softening attitudes
Currently, doctors treat the allergy by giving patients repeated injections of tiny amounts of pollen, but this is painful for patients, inconvenient because of the necessary repeat visits to the doctor, and carries a slight risk of a life-threatening reaction.

Patients treated instead with the rice would have to eat it regularly about three to six months before the allergy season, which lasts from February to April.

If it works, Takaiwa says the principle could easily be extended to other allergies. Already, his team is working a second type of rice to treat allergy to house mites. "We got good results in mice," he says.

Takaiwa is also hopeful that if it works, it will pave the way for other GM-based vaccines and help soften opposition to genetically modified crops. "If our rice works well, I think the atmosphere around GM food will change," he says.

The tiny creatures' giant sperm are an evolutionary strategy that stretches back at least a hundred million years, scientists discovered in a new study.

The giant sperm can be up to ten times the animals' body lengths. By comparison an average sperm from a man is around 0.002 inch (0.05 millimeter) long, less than a thirty-thousandth of his height.

To find out whether giant sperm is an ancient adaptation, researchers x-rayed the innards of five well-preserved seed shrimp, or ostracods, from hundred-million-year-old sediment from Brazil. Although the giant sperm had rotted away, the scientists could still see the remains of perhaps the ultimate male organ: a sperm pump, used to push the giant sperm out of the body.

Furthermore, two female specimens also found in the sediment had huge reproductive cavities.

These sperm receptacles only inflate when they carry sperm, meaning the [two] females must have mated only shortly before they died.

Why Giant Sperm?

The giant sperm could be the equivalent of a peacock's tail—a way of attracting females, researchers say.

Also, the large reproductive cells may "cork up" females, ensuring no other males have the opportunity to mate. Or perhaps the giant sperm are sources of nutrients for developing embryos, the researchers say.

If giant sperm is an effective adaptation, there ought to be other animals benefiting from it—and there are, the researchers note. Certain frogs, gastropods, and insects join seed shrimp in producing larger-than-life reproductive cells.

More than 90% of skin cancer is caused by sun exposure. The American Cancer Society estimates that more than one million new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed this year.

With statistics like that, Dr. Alexander , President of The Dermatological Society of New Jersey, for his advice on how we can all protect ourselves -- and our loved ones this summer. He recommends that adults should be checked by a dermatologist once a year. "The most important lesson is in prevention" said Dr. Doctoroff. "But early detection can prevent skin cancer from becoming life-threatening".

Sun Screen exposure cause cancer_woman_Small

Top Ten Ways to Protect Yourself from the Sun
1. Use sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 15. Make sure it is water-resistant and reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.
2. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside so your skin has time to absorb it.
3. Be generous in application of sunscreen. An ounce of sunscreen should cover the face, neck, arms and legs of the average adult.
4. Wear protective clothing, like hats, sunglasses, long-sleeved shirts and pants
5. Seek shade when possible, especially during the hours of 10:00 am to 4:00 pm when the sun's rays are strongest.
6. Avoid tanning beds as ultraviolet light can cause skin cancer and wrinkling. Use a self-tanning product but use sunscreen with it.
7. Protect children by reapplying sunscreen often with an SPF of at least 15, having them play in the shade and wear protective clothing.
8. Babies under the age of 6 months should never be in direct sunlight and should always wear a hat and clothing that protects them from UV rays.
9. Adults should perform regular self-exams. It is an easy way to detect abnormalities
10. Talk to your dermatologist and have a complete body scan once a year.

The agreement comes after talks between the phone companies and the European Commission, which threatened legislation to reduce waste if agreement was not reached.

The EC estimates that discarded chargers create "several thousand tons" of waste each year, but a common charger means users can continue using old chargers with new phones.

EU industry commissioner Günter Verheugen said he was pleased the agreement was reached on the basis of self-regulation.

"As a result, the commission does not consider it necessary to introduce legislation," he said.

Apple, LG, Motorola, NEC, Nokia, Qualcomm, Research in Motion, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Texas Instruments signed a memorandum of understanding submitted to EC.

Consumer groups have welcomed the agreement, but have expressed disappointment that it is not international, but confined to the EU.

The agreement could help accelerate standardisation efforts by a GSMA-led alliance of 17 phone makers and mobile operators that includes five signatories of the EU agreement.

Along with LG, Nokia, Qualcomm, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, the alliance includes 3 Group, AT&T, KTF, mobilkom austria, Motorola, Orange, Telecom Italia, Telefónica, Telenor, Telstra, T-Mobile and Vodafone.

In February, the alliance committed to achieving a common worldwide charger by 2012.

A magnet is an object that emits invisble lines of force between its poles. The earth is no different it’s just one big magnet emitting its own magnetic field between its two poles. Earths magnetic field is called the magnetosphere and surrounds the planet stretching over 36,000 miles into space, but why do we have a magnetic field and what’s it good for ?

earth magnetic field

Well scientists believe that electrical currents within the Earths molten iron core combined with the natural motion generated from the Earths rotation produces our magnetic field. This process is otherwise known as the Dynamo Effect.

So how exactly does the magnetosphere help us ? Well for starters it shields the Earth from the charged particles and radiation emitted from the suns outer surface. This stream of particles also referred to as solar wind, travels towards the Earth at speeds as high as 1,000,000 mph. Was it not for the magnetosphere which stops and deflects the solar wind the Earth would have very little protection from these destructive forces.

Microsoft announced more details about its new service Morro, its plan for Microsoft Security Essentials. Morro is a free antivirus service for Windows that looks like it really can give Symantec and McAfee a run for their money. Should they be worried? Check out some of the details below.

The most important detail to me: free. Sure I want to protect my computer from the zillions of threats out there, but when the money starts coming out of my pocket I start feeling like I need to live a little more on the edge and maybe surf Hulu and io9 without protection. But Morro has some actual features that I could get behind as well.

Microsoft MORRO

  • Real-time protection
  • Lightweight design (not as many features as the security suites you buy)
  • Idle-time scanning
  • CPU throttling
  • Rootkit Protection

There are ups and downs to these features. Obviously if you go with something like Morro you won’t be getting the protection you would from real antivirus software, but this slimmed down version of Microsoft’s Live OneCare is definitely far better than nothing, and may have Symantec and McAfee feeling a little uncomfortable. Microsoft has already got Google and Nintendo squirming. Who’s next, Microsoft? Are you going to launch a new social networking site to rival Facebook?

We’ll have to wait and see, but it seems like Microsoft is riding an uncommon wave of success right now, so you probably should at least check out Morro it will be available to download on June 23.

Having to plug your cell phone into the wall or car to charge it every day is so 20th century and so far behind in the way we need our technology to function, that it’s about time someone has started to put serious research into a cell phone that can charge itself, without the wires. Apparently the Nokia Research Center in Cambridge, England thinks the same thing and are working on a way to charge our wireless phones wirelessly.

Thinking about our mobile lifestyles and how more and more often our phones are becoming our personal life assistants, it’s almost laughably archaic to think that we still need to be tethered to a power outlet and cord every 24 hours or so to juice up our devices again. Nokia is going to change that, if they have their way. Their new system would collect energy from the radio waves emitted by just about everything we use (TVs, antennas, WiFi things and so forth). Essentially the Nokia phones would catch these radio waves floating around in the air and harness them for energy.

Currently the prototype can do about 5 milliwatts of energy, apparently enough to keep a phone on standby charged indefinitely. They want to get it up to 50 milliwatts, which won’t keep the phone charged when we’re spending inordinate amounts of time watching video clips on Facebook, but will be able to slowly recharge the battery. The only real problem I foresee from this method of charging cell phones is that teenagers will suddenly start hanging out at the front of mall stores hoping to charge their phones from the RFID technology used in the alarm systems to keep shoplifters from carrying product out the door.

Michael Jackson fans who bought tickets for his This Is It 50-day tour, would get their money back, eBay confirmed. About 750,000 tickets were sold for the series of 50 "comeback" concert performances by Michael Jackson, which were intended to take place beginning on 13 July 2009, at The O2 arena in London and continue throughout the year.

Each performance would have had a maximum capacity of 23,000 — it was estimated that more than one million people would have attended the shows. Randy Phillips, president and chief executive, AEG Live, (the organiser of Michael Jackson's concerts) stated that the first 10 dates alone would have earned the singer approximately £50 million.

eBay said, "The sad news of Michael Jackson’s death has left fans of the King of Pop bereft. eBay is committed to ensuring that no buyer is left out of pocket as a result of the unique nature of the event and will ensure all buyers on the site can receive a full refund for their ticket purchase."

On this basis, eBay and PayPal is extending its Buyer Protection to all Michael Jackson concert ticket purchases bought on eBay. The company will also help sellers by refunding eBay’s sales commission when they refund buyers for Michael Jackson ticket sales.

Final details of how buyers and sellers can work with eBay and PayPal will be announced early next week.

The O2 arena issued a statement indicating, "Full ticket refund information and procedures will be released early next week for all Michael Jackson This Is It shows."

Barry's Tickets Service also released a statement, "In light of the tragic news on Michael Jackson, all tickets purchased through www.BarrysTickets.com will be 100 per cent refunded directly to fans. Please e-mail us at info@barrystickets.com or contact us at (800) 348-8499. We will be in touch with everyone in due course."

Jackson died on 25 June 2009, following a cardiac arrest, 18 days before his planned first show.

AEG Live, who persuaded Jackson to sign up for the shows, is currently facing a liability of up to £300 million and an empty venue for the next nine months.

In an interesting survey of what makes a woman beautiful, the majority of respondents indicated that a smile makes a beautiful woman beautiful.

Try it for yourself. It does work. But above all you’ll find your own self-image improving as well. Research shows that it takes twice as much energy to frown than to crack a smile. A smile goes with personality, sense of humor and approachability. And the end result? A Beautiful you!

Don’t let anyone tell you that beauty comes in a vial of cream or a tube of lipstick. That expensive dress, though flattering, does not make you attractive. Rather, your spirit and passion are the true benchmark for beauty.

Smile and the whole world see you as beautiful. Therefore, look into the mirror, smile and see yourself as the beautiful woman you already are.
