Is Turning 30 India's answer to Bridget Jones's Diary?

The promos of Gul Panag starrer Turning 30 do bear an uncanny resemblance to the Hollywood cult classic Bridget Jones's Diary which starred Renee Zellweger in the lead role. After all, both films are woman-centric and deal with problems faced by a woman with respect to her job, friends and of course love life.

We quizzed director Alankrita Shrivastava who makes her debut with Turning 30 if her film is India's answer to Bridget Jones's Diary and this is what she said, "I wouldn't call it India's answer to Bridget Jones's Diary but it is India's answer to the chick flicks genre. I have always enjoyed watching chick flicks and hence wrote a story that deals with issues plaguing most women of the present generation when they are past their twenties and entering their thirties."

Elaborating more on her film, Alankrita says, "Gul's character Naina in the film faces issues which any modern, urban, independent girl could face. These are issues relating to her love life, politics at work, friends' circle etc. Also unlike Renee Zellweger's character in Bridget Jones's Diary, Naina is an achiever, a go-getter and someone who will come up triumphs against all odds despite fighting her own battle. It's a tribute of sorts to the modern woman."

Considering that the film projects Woman Power like never before, wouldn't it have been better to release the film on International Women's Day in March. Says Alankrita, "Yeah...that would have been great but to be honest I've been too busy working on the film to look into these things and believe that the producers and distributors are the best people to take a call on the release date. I am happy that my film is releasing (Jan 14) and can't thank Mr. Prakash Jha enough without whose support and vision this dream of mine wouldn't have become a reality.
